I've always read that it is best to leave some string groves in the center of the strike-point so as not to get the hammer face misaligned with the strings. Of course, you can always re-align and mate the hammer-to-strings. Did the tech do any voicing/needling? It's amazing how much better the tone of a piano can sound after the hammer filing, shaping and voicing! All the best!! I played it a little right after he put the action back into the piano. Much more clarity than before. If you look close you might see that it was C4 that broke, and my technician decided to swap the original C88 for the broken C4 and put the replacement hammer on C88. This was done quite a while ago and it seems to work fine. Last edited by David Farley; 06/24/17 08:59 PM.

Swapping out the new shank and flange on C8 (key #88) doesn't look as awkward as it would on C4, and would match the others better. Besides, it is not often we play C8. Also, in my view, only the best quality acoustic pianos would have any clarity or discernment of tone on C8 anyway. Most others only produce a "thud" sound at C8. All the best!
