Hi all, I am choosing between GX-2 and RX-2......also maybe shigeru.....but can any of the price be haggled? I look at the price of GX 2 and it's about 40K US dollar and it's pretty crazy...

Depends on the dealer and what they have to offer. My only local Kawai dealer prices far higher than prices that others post on this forum for their region, and the dealer here won't haggle a thing; they just let you walk away.

Then 10 miles away, the dealer for another brand(s) will haggle away until you leave with a piano, as long as it's reasonable.

I've seen this scenario before, and not just with new piano dealers. I figure the business/owner has enough money in the bank they don't need to haggle. They set a high price on their goods and a prospective buyer can take it or leave it. Not only so, but they can be rude and obnoxious toward customers without worrying about their reputations; they don't care. Must be nice to be in a position to do this...

Thing is, I suppose these dealers likely sell fewer pianos at a higher profit, whereas the dealer down the street sells more pianos at a lower profit margin. Whatever works for them is best, I suppose. Perhaps this is why Larry Fine decided to write and publish the PianoBuyer pricing guide. smile

+1

Dealers come in all shapes and sizes. I think most dealers would like to make a sale. If you want the piano, you can research the price with Piano Buyer (linked at left), and make an offer.

No, I'm not a piano dealer, James. Just curious, what ever gave you that idea?

For the record, I have bought and sold a few pianos in the process of upgrading or just tinkering as a hobby. Most of the ones I sold (5 or 6 at the most), I lost money or broke even; if I did sell one for more than I paid, any profit was negligible at best. And, the pianos were in better shape when I sold them than when I bought them.

Fact is, I'd never make it in the piano business. My mantra seems to be buy high and sell cheap; or is it buy cheap and sell cheaper? smile

Weren't you deciding between Hamburg Steinway A or B last year? What changed your mind (or is it a second/third/more-th piano you are getting?)

2013 Steinway (NY) Model A, bought 2015
2005 Yamaha GB1, bought 2005
Kawai MP11, bought 2017

I decided to switch to Kawai's because it's really hard for me to get Steinways, at least for now I will get Kawai's

There are these kinds of business owners everywhere in every business.

They would rather make no money - than less than they think they deserve.

In my experience (a lot of it) - 9 out of 10 business owners with this mentality eventually go out of business.

Especially today with the Internet.

Chances are if they feel confident enough with their prices and do not care if you walk, they are doing quite well. Look at apple, their prices are laughable at best for the hardware you get, and yet, they know their market, (or at least did, they seem to be getting into some hot water with their fan base now). if the business is profitable then why would the seller change their ways?

A lot of conclusory statements above with few facts to support them.

James, have you actually spoken to the dealer? The RX is not a current model so I assume it is used. The price you stated for the GX is close to Fjne's published SMP. And. shigeru's are fairly rare. Is this one new or used?

Did the dealer state a price on any of these? Did you ale a Offer?

May it please your grace, I agree. The answer is we don't know enough.

Pologuy, again you are on the money there. I always thought it was better to get something rather than nothing. Much confusion is caused by people not understanding the concept of marginal costing. Once you are in business generally making a sale at above cost is good news. Of course there are exceptions but lack of flexibility in a seller can be counter productive.
