Hi Dave

I watched it on YouTube a few days ago.
That lesson alone probably has enough material alone to last a mere mortal like myself the rest of my lifetime.

Many thanks

Simon

Thanks, Dave.

Question: What does "abstraction" mean?

It refers to a way of approaching an improvised line where you are emphasizing the spaces rather than the notes, in a syncopated fashion..like concentrating on the space around the photographic subject rather than on the subject itself..

Aha! So this is a kind of pointillism - telegraphic manner improvisation ...

Thanks. Could you point us toward an example or two, other than the things you played?

And speaking of quirky soloing techniques, what would you call the thing that Alan Pasqua does here at about 1:28?

Hi Ed, the only thing that comes to mind at the moment would be some of Keith's solo abstract improvs...the Alan thing is of a similar concept too I think..

So if the concept consists of emphasizing the spaces rather than the notes, I guess the way to do that is to play the rests fff, while playing the notes ppp. I'm pretty good at playing the notes ppp or fff, but it's hard to tell the difference between my ppp rest and my fff rest, unless you look at my teeth, or the sweat on my brow. I guess this is one of those things that takes years of practice.

Riddler, the most vivid example of this concept is John Cage's 4'33 ; or in other words: what do we hear when nothing sounds on stage? .This question has two answers: we hear what sounds outside the scene; or: we hear what sounds inside of us. Cage simply created an silent audio mirror for audience, which involuntarily forces to shift the focus from music to what is happening outside of music ; it always happens - remember the public coughing between parts of symphony. And exactly this focus can be accentuated at the level of 3f ,maybe 4 f !
On a practical level: during pauses in improvisation, we listen to the comp as much strong as we do to ourselves.
