There's a Samsung one amongst others which is the width of an 88 note keyboard, and looks a good choice as a discreetly positioned speaker system for a digital set up, for present and future use, with or without sub. These are mostly used for home theatre, and vary greatly in price as one might expect.
Any thoughts?

Whether it's worth it probably strongly depends on how good the speakers of your DP are already, and which direction they face.

I wouldn't have thought they'd be optimized for near-field listening though.

Only one way to find out. Order online and send it back within 14 days if you don't like it.

I think that the most-common dimensions for the rectangular speakers in DP's (e.g. Casio PX-150: 13cm x 6 cm) match the dimensions of the speakers in my LG TV soundbar (which has a small "subwoofer" as well). Maybe the DP makers have settled on that size because a gazillion have been manufactured, they're cheap, and they're good enough for most buyers.

I know not _all_ DP's use them, but a bunch do. I imagine that using a soundbar _and subwoofer_ (a woofer, for purists) would work fine.

I've been surprised by how good the TV soundbar sounds for TV material, but I've never tried it on live music. I wouldn't expect it to play as loudly as my ZXA1, but it might do OK at lower volumes.

One of my neighbors was selling this Yamaha soundbar with built-in sub on Nextdoor:

http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/digital-sound-projector/ats-1010/

Just as I had started looking at speakers to supplement/supplant the built-in speakers of my DP... The neighbor only wanted $50US for it, and it was in perfect condition, so I thought I'd try it out. It has only an optical input, and I needed to order an adapter, which is on the way. In the meantime, I connected it to an Apple TV and tried it out for sound using Airplay (my piano sound is coming from my MacBook because I'm using Pianoteq). My "piano room" is the dining room, and fairly small, but I thought it sounded very good when playing back recorded segments from Pianoteq (there's too much latency with Airplay to try it live). Once my adapter arrives, I'll try it for live play and see how it sounds. It does seem that it won't look too unsightly on top of my DP, although this may be a slippery slope where I'll need to get a polished ebony piano to go with the soundbar! cool

I'm sure a soundbar would work and sound pleasant enough, and the shape does seem fitting for a DP, but I think you'll get a much better cost to value ratio with a pair of studio monitors.

Was thinking of a pair o' Rokit 5 or equiv; the room's only small and the old DGX speakers more than filled it on half volume . . . now, the FP50 is louder, but could do with "adjusting".

Was previously thinking of another small practice amp, but reckon the monitors would beat it on quality, hum and size . . .ideally they should be heard and not seen.

This guy has some stats on small speakers and "reviews". He states "don't purchase" on about 1/3 of the desktop speakers and explains why. He usually takes photos of speaker internals, comments on build quality, component quality, and does some quick measurements. I might ignore the DSP correction comments.

You should try before you buy but this is not a terrible place to start:

The only real way to try 'em is to buy 'em! (online) There's no mention of the Rokit 5 on that link, but the LSR305 gets a lot of credit from many sources. Might just get them instead . . . .Presonus seems highly rated too. Dammit, I only want one pair; why does life have to be so bloody complicated . . . . .
