Hi everybody. The Baldwin didn't work out so the search for another piano for my music room has moved on. I found a 1981 yamaha P22 a little bit from me and am going to check it out. It was built in South Haven Mi, has only had 1 owner and has been meticulously kept serviced with all records. It mostly was used as a piece of furniture and the components are in "A" condition. The sellers are downsizing and will let it go for $600.

Can anybody tell me anything I need to worry about with a 1981 yamaha and can anyone provide any info on the uprights coming out of Michigan at that time versus those made in Japan or the Thomaston factory?

If you like it, it is a good price.

Don't know about the build locations and differences. It's a pretty old piano, as Asian pianos go.

What I can say, is that if it has been regularly serviced and lightly used, it's most likely worth the asking price. P22's have long been a staple in the Yamaha line and for good reason.

I priced a new one a couple of months ago and with a pretty decent discount, IIRC it was a $5k-ish piano.

It is not an Asian piano. It is an Asian design made in the Everett plant in Michigan.
