Greetings,
I am beginning to explore the top to bottom repair of pneumatic player piano systems. I have installed modern system for many years (20+) but have moved to the country and am finding many older pianos with tired systems. Is this the right forum? I have found a Chute and Butler with a Standard mechanism and would like to post some questions or comments from time to time. Thanks for reading this.

I found this on CL and looked at it last week. This seems to be a good player system to start with. I identified it as a Standard player mechanism by comparison with the Reblitz book. I believe this is a fairly common player system that I should start with. The piano (as well as the player) are all original and has never been repaired or rebuilt. The piano cabinet sides have become unglued but I have no problem with the upright restoration. The bench is unusual as it has two tops with one having a cam-like wood hinge as part of the wood top but not sure how it all fits together. I have more pictures if needed. $100.00 but he really wants it out so I think it will be a freebie. Any suggestions or opinions on this are appreciated.

Is this price realistic? I think the Chickering restoration would be fantastic but is the Ampico mechanism that much more valuable. $110000.00?

Hi David,

That price on an Ampico upright is a pipe dream. The market is very depressed on mechanical players, especially uprights. The Reblitz book is a good start. As far as forums, the Mechanical Music Digest will have a lot more posts about these players than Piano World. If you are serious about getting involved in this, you might also want to consider joining AMICA .

Dave,
Thanks for your response. I have seen more older upright players and not very many techs in my area. I'm semi retired (HA) but really just want to repair/restore all components in my shop. Been doing service calls for 31 years. I have looked into the MMD a couple of times but not having much luck navigating it. I'm sure I'l get the hang of it but am not finding any titled threads. I'll keep looking. I will look into AMICA. Thanks
