Hi all,

I apologize in advance for any ignorance/naivety in this post, as I've only recently begun to play piano, but I was hoping that someone could give an approximate age of my instrument. I recently acquired the piano for free - it is a Keller console, with serial number 55671. The harp is branded as a Wickham, with an embossed KB072. The numbers 89, 10, and 28 are aligned vertically near the bottom of the harp.

From my research, both Keller companies (Sons, Brothers) went bankrupt in the 30's. The overall style of the piano is not reminiscent of an instrument from that time period, so I am rather confused as to what the "Keller" name on the front refers to. I did find a humidistat within the piano itself with a patent from 1973 - could this give some insight in regards to the age? I have some pictures of the instrument below. The previous owner repainted the exterior to a matte black, but I was told that it originally varnished oak.

Thanks in advance! thumb

In the Pierce Piano Atlas I can't find any serial number that comes close to the one you cite, among the various Kellers (Keller Bros., Bridgeport, Conn; Keller-Dunham Piano Co., Scranton, Pa; Keller and Sons, Henry, New York). "Wickam (or Wickham) may have been made by Winter Co." but no serial numbers are listed for Wickam (Wickham).

Regards,

Humidity equipment is usually aftermarket and retrofitted, so it probably is not indicative of the piano's age.

Keller may be a stencil -- the name of a retailer applied by the factory on special order. Wickham was one of many names owned by Winter & Co., but as a Winter serial number, 55671 would date from 1916. The piano in the picture is a simple modern console, very unlikely to be earlier than the 1950's. My guess would be it's a recent generic Asian stencil piano.

Can you shoot some detailed pictures inside it?

I believe its a spinet, not a console. You can see the elbows below the keybed in one of the pictures. At least they are wood and not plastic...

Wickham was one of the foundries casting plates in the US. It is probably a stencil brand, as stated before. From the style, it looks to be 40-50 years old.

Thanks for the help everyone! I do think that it probably is a stencil (new term for me! crazy). From a more in depth analysis of it, it appears that it was roughly manufactured/assembled. There are quite a few differences in the screws used on opposing sides of the frame (and even a few nails!). The piano is indeed a console - the hammers are above the keys. I'll take some pictures of the interior when I remove the front panel for tuning.

In any case, I think that attempting to recondition it will be a fun project to undertake - I'll gain some new skills and have a better understanding of the instrument itself!

It is not the hammers that have to be above the keys, it is the wippens.
