Dear Friends,

Just received delivery of my new Petrof 5'3" grand, as I have mentioned in other threads. After a few days of playing, I am noticing a buzzing when playing C6. When I pull up the damper, it goes away, but comes back later. Is this serious? I was told to wait a month before having my piano tuned and voiced, so it is right out of the piano mover's truck at this point.

Thanks for any advice.

It's not serious, Shoshana, and most new pianos experience settling-in issues like that. If the buzzing is not overly annoying, try to hold off until you get the piano tuned in a few weeks. Keep a notepad near the piano and jot down this and anything else that comes up, and the tech can deal with them all at the first visit. I think I had 2 buzzes and 3 sticky dampers at my first service call.

The damper wire is probably rubbing against the vibrating string, causing the buzz. It's an easy adjustment. Congrats on the Petrof - It's a nice piano.

First of all, congratulations! I am sure you will enjoy for many years to come!
When I had a problem with a damper in my new baby grand I called for servicing right away. Since the piano is covered under the warranty, they sent a service person out the same day and took care of the problem. And Monica Kern is right about the settling issues. The technician said to me that the pianos are "raw" in the beginning and need to be broken into. WE've had the piano for three months now and it sounds and feels better everyday.
In addition, buzzing could be coming from outside the piano...i had this buzzing problem with my other piano. i figured out that it was the thermostat cover that was vibrating when the piano key was hit. Look around and see if there is a lamp, loose alarm key pad cover, light switch, anything that could respond to the sound waves travelling from your piano. Just a thought!

Thanks, Monica. I will keep the note pad by my piano! Good idea. I am relieved to know that this is common.

Thanks, Bob. I saw the wire when I pulled up the damper, so this makes great sense.

Thanks, Stellabella. I will be optimistic about improvements, and look for external detritis that might be causing noise.

I read tonight in a list of things to look for when buying a used piano (mine is new) that a buzzing noise could be a problem. So I was worried. Thanks to all for the reality check. I knew I could count on you.

Shoshana
