So I saw a post for a Schimmel 51" piano with the following description:

"The piano has some smaller soundboard cracks and has already been glued at the bass string bridge for a crack. Tuning pins are lose and need work in order to hold a tune. Some bridal straps also need replaced. Otherwise, strings and tuning pins look nice and the keytops have been replaced."

How bad does this sound? I know that Schimmel are considered really good pianos. Is this a major fix? Any idea on the cost? The piano in question is being listed at $500.

It doesn't sound good. Loose tuning pins, especially, are a bad warning sign. Only accept this piano if it is being given away for free.

How old is it?

The concept of the "good make" is of very limited value. Just as with cars, what really matters is condition, mileage and service history.
