Can anyone talk me through how to program the Roland RD-700SX?

I'm playing for 2 musicals very soon, both of which require me to switch quickly between different tones. I won't have time to press a bunch of buttons multiple times in each song. I need to be able to program all the tones I want, in order, and just hit 'next' (or increase, or whatever) to take me to the next tone. I might need to have the same tone programmed in a number of times as I return to the same sound.

Since I'm playing for 2 shows, I'll need to have 2 separate setups, each with the set of tones programmed in order.

Is that possible with the RD-700SX? I've tried using the 'setup' feature, but I don't fully understand the terminology to work it out. And the manual reads like it's gone through Google translate a few times!

Any help at all appreciated.
Cheers.

She might like Tori Amos. Or be Tori Amos. wink

(And sorry, I'm not familiar with Roland stage pianos. But I'm sure someone will bring this discussion back on topic...)

I ended up contacting Roland Support and had an incredibly helpful reply. I thought I'd pop it here on the off-chance that someone else like me is tech-challenged and googling the same problem.

The RD-700SX’s INTERNAL ZONE and EXTERNAL ZONE (p. 28 of the manual) tone settings, effect settings, and other such settings are collectively referred to as a “Setup.”
Once you’ve stored your preferred settings, and settings for the songs to be performed as a Setup, you can then switch whole groups of settings during a performance just by switching Setups.
You can store up to 100 different Setups.
The RD-700SX is shipped from the factory with recommended Setups already prepared.
You can also register the Setups you like and use frequently to the TONE SELECT
buttons. These registered Setups are called the “Favorite Setups.”
This function allows you to select Setups more quickly.

Owner’s manual - https://www.roland.com/us/support/b...ls/9e111f85-b227-4179-b59e-5b70a8b8ee23/

Page 56 of the manual has info on Selecting a Setup.

I actually needed this broken down a bit more for me as I'm not on top off all the terminology. See my previous comment about 'tech-challenged'. So they helpfully gave me a Dummies version:

A ‘setup’ is a ‘patch’.
You can store 100 setups in the RD-700SX.
You can save 40 of these setups to ‘favourite setups’.
There are 4x banks with 10 SETUPS inside each bank. This is where you save your favourite setups and recall them.
There are four banks, A, B, C, D. Each time you press F2, the bank is switched to the next one. Inside each bank is 10 favourite setups.

The patches/numbers you mention are ‘tones’ (string patch #093, then a celeste #054, then brass #173).
There are many tones in the RD-700SX, They make up part of a SETUP, alongside other setting like effects etc.

You will be able to easily recall 40 setups via the TONE SELECT and BANK buttons.
You can have up to 100 Setups saved in the piano but only 40 can be easily recalled via the TONE SELECT BUTTONS.
If you wish to recall more than 40 SETUPS in a performance you will have to select the other tones by pressing SETUP then using the DEC/INC buttons.

Use the following procedure to store a SETUP:

1. Press WRITE so it is lit.
2. Use the CURSOR < / > buttons and the DEC / INC buttons to name your setup.
3. Press the CURSOR V button to move the cursor to the setup destination field.
4. Use the DEC / INC buttons to select a memory location (001-100) where you want to store your current setup.
NOTE: The setup currently stored in the selected location will be overwritten.
5. Press ENTER to display “Are You Sure?”
6. Press ENTER to display “Writing…”
The display will return to normal.

You can now use the following procedure to recall your SETUP:

1. Press SETUP so it is lit.
2. Use the DEC/INC buttons to select the desired setup.

To register a SETUP as a FAVORITE (to the bank and tone select buttons);

1. Press SETUP so it is lit.
2. Use the DEC/INC buttons to select the desired setup.
3. Press F2 [BANK CHANGE] to select the desired destination bank (A-D).
4. Hold F1 [ASSIGN] and press the desired Tone Select button (0-9) to assign the setup to this location.
You can now press this button whenever the SETUP button is lit to quickly select your setup.

Hope this helps someone somewhere in internet-land. I've also used a similar procedure for and old RD300 so hopefully it works with other models. xx.
