It's not a hyperbole. Non-practicers can go even slower than that!

I'm not catching the implication in regards to pedagogy or learning, of who made the recordings. What does "legendary" mean, and why is this important?

The point is: Spending months and months and months polishing one piece (that's not for an exam or competition or even a recital) is simply bad teaching. Forcing students to hear one definitive recording over and over and over and over again is overkill, and it totally defeats the purpose of listening to recordings.

I think, in retrospect, the purpose of the recordings is to let the students know what the piece is supposed to sound like, so they will more likely play in tune. Kind of a moot point if the student has perfect pitch already.

Quality if far more productive than mindless quantity, but even now, after playing for the better part of my life, the longer my practice sessions each day, the faster is my progress, strength, flexibility and memory.

thumb

You will get a huge 'thumbs up' from me! As an adult student, who also studied many years as a child, no one has ever asked me 'how do you practice?' or 'let's discuss how you should practice'? I have had to investigate good practice techniques on my own when I finally realized 'there must be a more efficient way'. ... four teachers and two adult piano camps in the mix of teachers. Your students will be well ahead of the pack!
