So, I had a student around today who was learning to sing a classical piece for an up-coming concert.

She was struggling to pitch 3 notes C - G - Eb over an F bass (F9 if you will) but she thought the three notes sounded like the start of a famous pop song.

Ignoring the note values, can anyone think of a famous pop song that starts with these 3 notes (C up to G down to Eb) on an F9 chord ?

I don't know about the F chord but the three notes remind me of these two pieces, though not pop songs:

Neon Genesis Evangelion – Thanatos
Yusef Lateef - Love Theme From Spartacus

Hi

I know this as the repeated opening phrase of the wonderful "Emily" (1964) by Johnny Mandel. In the original sheet music version the phrase was initially played over a Dmaj7 chord, so transposed appropriately that would make the harmony an Abmaj7 chord using C,G,Eb. Its not exactly the same harmony but its pretty close.

I don't know if this was ever a hit, but it has become a bit of Jazz standard as Bill Evans recorded and played it many times.

Cheers

As a person who never really listened to a lot of recorded music, I didn't know Emily was a famous song.

I found it in a Fake Book, fell in love with it and I now always play it first whenever I play for various gigs. It seems to get me started in some strange way and everything seems to go better after that.

A remarkable song in my opinion.

Again, not with the F bass, but singing C G Eb got me to the intro for Diamonds Are Forever.

Sounds almost like Our Love Is Here To Stay in Eb (there's an extra Bb before though)

Not pop, but those are the first 3 notes (well at least the intervals) in Bach's "Little Fugue" in G minor.

Now learning: Debussy Clar de Lune, Mozart Sonata in C K. 545, Joplin The Chrysanthemum
Instruments: Yamaha N1X, Roland GO:PIANO, Piano de Voyage
