This is a place we visited once or twice when I was a kid. I wonder what the story is on that piano. The resort went out business in 1990 and yet that piano looks to be in much better shape than its surroundings.

Could be mistaken for a spooky scene from "The Shining."

Buck Hill Falls. When I was a kid I was convinced that's where they must have filmed The Shining, but they didn't. But it had a squeaky-clean reputation. It was owned by Quakers. They catered to church conventions and such. It's finally in the process of being demolished.

That is either a B or D (could be a C?) and letting it rot there is such a sin!

that photo reminds me of the detroit picture with the desolate casino and flipped piano rotting away. probably soon to be that place in a few years.

It seems someone is taking care of that piano.

Is it a Steinway?

It sure looks it, although there are good clones I guess. but either way it is a large grand piano, even a pearl river does not deserve that fate.

I don't think it is a Steinway. I enlarged the image and while the logo isn't clear enough to read, it is one word beginning with an upper case letter, rather than the familiar "Steinway & Sons".

If it is a Steinway, it would be from about 1885 to 1910.

might I ask where you where getting that date from?

dating pianos is not a skill I have acquired yet.
(neither in the romantic or judging and age sense...)

I'm thinking Model "B"ish a bit newer than BDB's guess based on the style of the pedal box. Correct legs, rim arms are a bit hard to tell, half round beading on the case and relief work on legs look correct.

That is the period when Steinway used that style cheek and side molding, curved cheek with the hump in the middle, and the double molding around the bottom of the case.

No. That case design was not used by Baldwin as far as I know.

Legs, lyre and decal all could have been changed when the piano was rebuilt. While there were companies that copied Steinway case designs, it is not likely that they would have copied such a large piano.

Another Steinway - if anyone in Australia is interested, Jascha Heifetz' upright Steinway is up for auction.

The reason I identified the piano as a Steinway was because that's how the original source photo was tagged.
