I am considering to buy a used Bosendorfer 6'7", made in 1986, looks in good condition, and with ivory keys. Price $38,000 after hard negotiation. Do you guys think is it a good deal or not? This is my first time buying a luxury piano! The seller said it was one owner and totally original piano. How can I verify it's original?
Any advices appreciate.

Have it inspected by a piano technician familiar with Bösendorfer pianos.

Have it inspected by a piano technician familiar with Bösendorfer pianos. Tremendous advice. Pianos are cared for and exposed to different use, abuse, degree of neglect, and varying levels of knowledge from well meaning service people. It could be doing you a tremendous disservice to answer your question without seeing the piano. My 2 cents,

Thanks. I am doing search online. Hope will find one.
The seller call me just now, said there is another buyer coming in, and urge me to make a decision ASAP.

Yes. You are right. And I found that's not easy to find a good second hand Bosendorfer near me. The seller offer 5-years warranty, free delivery, free tuning and included an adjustable bench. I am a little excited about buying the Bose. But I have to keep clam!

Lucas,
I would be wary of any form of high pressure sales tactics. If the seller is not interested in you having it inspected, that is a serious red flag.
Any SERIOUS buyer is going to have it CAREFULLY looked over before spending that kind of money.
Unless losing $38k doesn't mean much to you, you'd better be careful.
Where are you located?

Thanks. He's not pushing too hard. I found that Bose three days ago, he just get back a encounter offer today. He did advise me to bring a export to inspect the Bose. $38K is a lot to me. That's why I am here trying to learn more about that before I spend the money.

It is very important to get a tech inspection, but Bosie's as a brand are top-tier... it just depends on your personal taste in pianos. Love it, first, and then get an inspection.

All good advice above. FYI, I played an early 70s Bose about a year ago that was selling for $34k. It is still on the dealer's website. It may have sold - or not. It was also a 6' 7". Personal inspection and an independent tech are essential
OOPS ! Misread the OP to read his piano was from 1968, not 1986. Sorry

In what state is the piano located? You may want to double check the law regarding transporting a piano with ivory through whatever states it will go, just to be sure (the rules about this stuff changed recently). For information's sake, after hard negotiation you could probably score a brand new, high quality piano of the same size for $40-50k, or a completely remanufactured/rebuilt piano from a reputable rebuilder instead of a 31 year old one in original condition.

Don't be swayed by the name. Ignore all pressure that you are about to be gazumped. Be sceptical. Bosie's are often nice, by and large. But have a very distinct sound that does not suit everyone. I am surprised by ivory keys at that age. Are you sure the keys are ivory and are you sure of the age? Ivory is not generally a selling point.

My 1984 Bosie 225 has ivory keys. U.S. manufacturers stopped making ivory keys before the Europeans did... and although no U.S.- produced piano from the 1980's has ivory keys, the Europeans still did produce them until 1989...and were allowed to import into the U.S! Virtually every Bosie produced before 1989 has ivory keys. I think $38K for a 1986 Bosendorfer 200 is a bit steep, unless the piano is a gem in perfect condition. It probably has leather key bushings, unique to Bosies in that era (as mine does), which need to be inspected.

Thanks guys.
I do like the tone and touch on the Bose. In fact, the unique sound is the main reason I want to own one. Then I found out there are not so many used Bose in the market, but a lot used Steinway. Some how I just can't find a Steinway fall in love with. I just come back from my neighbors home to try a Steinway B they're selling. But really not my thing!
I am in Oregon. Will check the law later.
The SN is around 38xxx something, so the build year should be 1986.
I think I am in love with that Bose tone. Maybe even over romantic! I have to clam down a little bit, spend few days to figure out whether I should buy it or not.

As they say, it's a matter of taste. In part, it depends on what you like to play. I play classical... the composers I play are predominantly Haydn, Mozart, Bach, and Schubert. Some Chopin (of course) and some Beethoven. I also love to play Ravel and Debussy. The Bosendorfer sound is well-suited for my reportoire lol Probably not so much if I played, say, mostly Rachmaninoff or Brahms, or ragtime! (They sound better with the "string-ier" harmonic Steinway sound.)

I believe Oregon has an ivory exclusion for musical instruments, so the ivory keys should not pose an issue as long as you stay in the state.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lead. But Classic Pianos in Portland is the Bosendorfer dealer, they may be worth contacting.

Price drop to $33K when I told the seller I will walk away! Games. If you are still interested, make your offer as firm but contingent upon passing a tech inspection. If the seller does not feel that is reasonable, it's a strong indication you should run the other way.
