March already, time for some liquid refreshment at the old piano bar!

My piece this month is Black Nile, written by Wayne Shorter, a jazz saxophone player and composer who played with the Jazz Messengers, the Miles Davis Quintet, and Weather Report. This is one of his earlier compositions and is relatively conventional in terms of harmony and form, compared to his later works.

I am playing the piano, but the bass and percussion are from a backing track.

Black Nile

Great as always, Ed! Love the improv in the middle. I could listen to this stuff all day!

Fabulous job, Ed. Agreed w/newbert - the improv is excellent. When I 'grow up', I'd love to be able to play like this.

Well, it's been a few years since I posted anything. But I figured I'd start back up with my favorite song, North Sea!

Scorpio, Newbert, xyzzyFL, thanks for listening and for your generous comments.

Augustina, long time no see/hear! Welcome back.

Nice left hand work on that one, it keeps things moving right along.

A bit over a month late for this piece, but I thought I'd add something to this month's Piano Bar anyway.

My Funny Valentine

I believe that this is my first submission ever to the Piano Bar, so I hope that you like it. The arrangement is mostly Kent Hewitt's, but I added a bit to the intro from Linda Ronstadt's Cover of this Rodgers and Hart Classic.

Very nicely played, Augustina. I wish that your recording was at a higher volume though - it deserves to be HEARD!

Bert, welcome to the piano bar. I have always liked that song. Excellent arrangement by Kent Hewitt, with appealing interior lines and interesting reharmonizations. And beautifully played, as usual. Also enjoyed hearing your arrangement of the verse.
