I have recently relocated to Malaga, and I would like to host a piano party on Saturday, September 9th. I live in Malaga City, next to Malagueta beach overlooking the Med on one side and the historical city and port on the other side. All the local attractions are within walking distance.

I have a nice piano,(Bosendorfer 214VC), and would love to host a piano party in my home, and invite my PianoWorld friends. So, if you live in Costa del Sol, or would like to visit here, come join us!

That sounds great PatH! I look forward to seeing you and your sister.

I will post hotel suggestions and sight-seeing ideas in the next week or so. Malaga is very walkable, and it is easy to get from the Airport to the downtown/Malagueta area. The Historical district, Muelle uno (restaurants and shops, the castle Gibralfaro, and The Moorish fortress Alcazaba and (of course the beach!) are all in walking distance from our place.

Here are a couple of hotel suggestions:

https://ms-maestranza-dot-ms-hoteles.appspot.com/booking1?sid=893c6759-d577-4357-8a33-5f32fcc3dcfa

We have stayed at the MS Maestranza, and it is quiet and pretty nice overall. It is the closest hotel.

http://hoteleliseos.es/

I have not stayed at this hotel, but it looks OK.

There are a lot of apartment rentals available as well. Some of these require a minimum three night stay. Here is a good site:

this is seriously interesting! I'm not sure if I could participate yet, but I've been once to Malaga and I've loved it! I'll see if I manage to fit a little flight to Andalucia in my 2017 summer plans smile

I keep price-checking flights to Malaga, and then reminding myself that I have a BIG trip this summer and no vacation budget left after that smile

You'll have to video your new piano being lifted up to your apartment, that sounds terrifyingly amazing!!

Still have not managed to confirm nor deny whether or not I will be coming solo or with another, as such I have put down a reservation on the hotel which I can amend until the end of august just to play it safe smile
Fingers crossed everything works out and we can both turn up, have got this at "Ms Maestranza Hotel"

Looking at the flights etc though, they're damn costly for this specific weekend... nearly double the other EPP costs so far, it has me a little concerned I just hope I can find a good deal/afford it.

I am sorry to hear that flights are so expensive, UKIkarus! Malaga is usually cheap. I do not know of anything going on that weekend. I hope your friend can come as well.

We couldn't get in at the MS Maestranza, we're a bit down the road.
Our flights were a bit more expensive than for other EPP locations but that could also be because of the timing of the booking - sometimes you get lucky. In any event it isn't outrageous, and the hotel is cheaper than any we've had for an EPP, and looks just as nice too, so .... luck of the draw I guess.

UkIkarus, I really hope you find a better deal!

Sinophilia - are you and R going to join us? That would be great!

Did I miss anyone? I am starting to think about the weekend and what to would be fun to do. Is everyone arriving on Friday? My ideas so far as as follows.
Friday evening we tour the historical district, Alcazabar, and Gilbrafaro. Then we do Tapas and dinner in a restaurant in old town. On Saturday we meet about 11:00 at my place and play piano, have some tapas and drinks. I was thinking about doing lunch on the beach somewhere around 3:00. Afterward we can play more piano if everyone wants to. Saturday evening we have a couple of options. We can go to Muelle Uno to a restaurant and take in the usual musical events there. Often there are bands or Flamenco dancing on Saturday night. Gary has another possibility, but we have to see if we can get permission to do it. I will keep you posted on that. At the end of the evening we can come back up to my apartment for the views over the city, castle, and Med. Of course you can always play more! Sunday, depending on when everyone is leaving, we can also get together if you like.

Some interesting things to do in Malaga for longer stays: The Hop on - Hop off bus gives a really good tour of the city. Interesting places to visit include the Picasso Museum, The interactive Music Museum. the Cathedral, Cervantes theater, etc. I can give you more info if you want. As we get closer to the date I will have an idea of what activities are going on. It seems there is always some kind of festival.

So let me know how the plan sounds to you, and if you have any suggestions of what you would like to do!

We are going to travel by car and we should arrive in Malaga on Saturday before lunch time. We go straight to your house.

I think we are going to leave Malaga only on Monday (something to confirm later) so we are free on Sunday all day. Any plan is good for us. thumb

I'm still uncertain when I'll be flying in at the moment as I haven't sorted the tickets, the reservation for the Hotel MS Maestranza I managed to put a deposit on is for Friday, however looking at the flights it would be MUCH cheaper to fly out Thursday.
In fact, it is so much cheaper that if my +1 does come, between us we could pay for the extra night from the savings on the flights alone.

As such I have asked on the site if the hotel has availability on the Thursday too with a view to possibly stretching it that extra day, will keep you posted never the less.

We arrive Friday morning and leave Sunday around 3.. For planning purposes I suppose we're available til about 1pm.

SwissMs your ideas sound great.

We definitely want to see those historical sites!

For Saturday evening the restaurant sounds lovely but I am also curious to see if Gary's plan works out. His mind works in such creative ways!

We're very happy to go with the flow, and delighted that so many old friends will be sharing the weekend! We're looking forward to making some new friends too!

If my +1 can get Monday off, we'll be flying in on Friday and leaving on Monday. It would save us a bundle on the plain tickets. But it's not confirmed yet; we're waiting on his boss to approve or deny ...

Plodding through piano music at a frustratingly slow pace since 9/2012.

Standard disclaimer: I teach many things. Piano is not one of them.

Sorry SwissMS, we will not join you after all. It's a long flight for a short 2/3-day trip - and we can't be away from home for more than that during the summer. I will be waiting for your photos and videos!

Sorry that you won't be joining us sinophilia! We will do lots of photos and videos to share.

I am working on ideas for the weekend activities. We will probably have a clearer ideas of what we can do by mid-June.

Hi all!

I am really sorry for my long absence, but I’ll join this party since I live pretty near Málaga.

My best wishes to you all. This forum is still in my mind wink.

The lovely thing about romance languages is that you can figure out what is being said most of the time, even without google smile

The last few times we have been in Spain we've managed with English and Italian - but picking up a bit of Spanish would be fun --- Olà!

So, just to confirm, I have managed to get the hotel booking extended from Thursday to Monday and as such will be arriving on the Thursday.
I don't yet know what time as I have yet to confirm the flights (yes I'm doing it all backwards but put a deposit on so I didn't miss out on the opportunity and it's definitely cheaper to fly out that day vs friday!) so now I need to figure out the best means of getting to the airport and the best times on the day.

It's also kind of resting on whether or not my +1 will come with me, which is still as of this moment up in the clouds frown

My parents live in Benahavis, and I'm planning to go down to visit at some point to escape the Scottish misery weather..... but I can't confirm what dates yet.

Wow, we would have loved to join you, just not in the budget this year.

We will be there in spirit, and expecting lots of pictures!

Best,

Looks like this is about the fastest and most cost effective way to get into the city!

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187438-c134024/Malaga:Spain:To.And.From.The.Malaga.Airport.html

Our stop will be the third one - I think for the majority it will be the fourth.

Yes, that is the best way to go. It is €3,50 per person. The other alternative is a taxi - which is the fastest way, but costs about €20.

The Larios stop is the main entrance to El Centro, the old city. If you are staying there, it is beautiful area, and an easy walk to our place.

We are trying to firm up some details for the party weekend, and should have some alternative ideas in the next week.

I am really looking forward to hosting this!

I am trying to firm up some reservations at this point, so I would like to get an idea of the number of total attendees. So far I have the following confirmed:

CarlosCC + 1
Casinitaly +1
PatH +1
UKikarus +?1
Moonsh1ne + 3
Sayanora +1
Recaredo

Possibles:
??Albunea
??

We are planning a tour Friday evening as follow: We will arrange transportation up to castle Gilbrafaro, tour there, and then tour theadjacent Moorish fortress (Alcazabar). Then we will take the elevator back down from Alcazabar to town, Then we will tour past the Roman ampitheater and into El Centro (the historical district). We will have Tapas and dinner in El Centro. Starting at the castle, everything is downhill, so it will not be a strenuous walk. The footing is mostly tile or flagstone. It is not a great distance. Keep in mind it could be hot in September, so we will make this tour around 6:00 pm or so in the evening. If people are up for it, after dinner we could walk back to our place for a night cap to see the night views over the castles, city, and Mediterranean.

Saturday I propose we get together about 11 am to start playing piano. We will have a lunch at our place around 2:00, and can continue to play after, or go to the beach, or what ever people are up for. Saturday evening is not settled yet. I would like to do something on the beach, but we are still negotiating possibilities. After dinner we can walk over to Muelle Uno, which usually has free entertainment in the evening until midnight. September 9th is the last day of the Flamenco Festival, so we might be treated to dance, song and guitar! Their September schedule is not posted yet.

So that is what I have at this point! Casinitaly's information on the bus transportation to the hotel is very good. It is a good and easy option. For transportation around Malaga as well, the buses are very reliable and inexpensive. Taxis are also readily available, and quite reasonably priced. One note on buses though - they stop running at 11:00 pm. Taxis are always available though.

For those who are staying longer, we will look for some additional activities.

Let me know if there is anything that you would like to see or do in Malaga, and I will check it out! See you all soon!

Sounds good, Carlos! We are looking forward to seeing you and Ana too!

Since you are coming in on Saturday, maybe we will delay the start time on Saturday a bit. That would also allow everyone to have time to do something Saturday morning. Perhaps it would be better if we all get together about 1:00 pm or so? How does that work for everyone?

I will send a pm to everyone of our address and contact information a couple of weeks before the event weekend.

Benahavis is near Marbella, and is about an hour from us. I have house guests from the 21st through the 30th, but if you want a piano fix before that, feel free to pm me! I love meeting other piano-worlders!

This sounds so fun! I only just noticed this thread when I had to re-login to piano world (normally I only view the piano forum). I checked my work schedule, and it looked like I would only have to swap one shift on Sept 10 to go. Then I checked fares to Malaga ($1300—not too bad).

I was getting really excited, and then I remembered that I have to testify at a homicide trial on September 6-7. :-(

Anyhow, I will have to look at the party forum more often in the future.

Thanks SwissMS for the program planning!

My sister's flight will land on Friday 8th at 12:20, mine at 15:50.
On Sunday 10th her flight leaves at 15:15, mine at 16:45.
So this should give us time to participate in the planned activities.

Coming up fast, hope everyone is ready, look forward to seeing you all again soon.

(Am trying to practice my piece but my hearing has gone currently and I can't hear the piano, going to see the doctors today so fingers crossed it'll be sorted by then)

That sounds terrible UKIkarus! I hope your hearing gets better soon!

I just sent a PM to everyone with my contact information and address for the party. For those getting together Friday night, we will meet at the MS Maestranza hotel at 6:00 pm for the trip up to the castle. (adress: Avenida Cánovas del Castillo, 1 - 29016 Malaga)

If you are not interested in visiting Gilbrafaro, Alcazabar, and the Roman Ampitheater, we will be having dinner at La Reserva de Oliva, Address: Plaza del Carbón, 2, at 8:00 pm. You can meet us there.

See you soon!

Just checked the weather. Is it true that temperatures around 30°C are to be expected?
This will be quite a shock. In Nürnberg, the early morning temperatures are already in the one-digit area; and I have caught a slight cold...

Hi PatH - The forecast is for a high of 28 on Friday, 32 on Saturday, and 28 on Sunday. The humidity is not high now, and the mornings and evenings are wonderful. Sorry to hear that you caught a cold!

I have a small change in plans for Friday. After the visit to Gilbrafaro and Alcazabar, we will have dinner at the open air restaurant Atico at the top of the Málaga Palace Hotel. The views from there are a great way to see the town. Here is the location.

SwissMs that sounds great!

After the heat we had here over the summer, even 28 with no humidity, is fine. 32 will be a tad toasty smile It's been cooler here the last week- down to low 20s, nothing like in Nurenberg though.

Patrick - hope your cold is gone by the time you have to fly -- flying with a cold is really unpleasant.

Our apartment is always 24C, so even though it is a bit warm on Saturday, we will play in air-conditioned comfort!

You can watch the people baking on the beach from our salon, or go down and take a dip yourself! The water is very nice this time of year. There is very little wave action most of the time, and little wind.

We're home! It was a fabulous weekend. SwissMs and GMajor are the bests hosts ever.
We had absolutely perfect weather - Malaga is delightful - the food was wonderful, and the piano was amazing!

I have to transfer pics from my phone to my pc to post them here ... will work on that for tomorrow.
In the meantime - a huge thank you to our superb Costa del Sol hosts --- we had a wonderful time with you!

It was great to see PatH, and his sister, UKIKarus plus one, and to meet Moonshine and his family - particularly his 10 year old son who was very likely the most relaxed pianist of the day. Loved his enthusiasm and energy!

CarlosCC - you and Mrs. Carlos were missed
Saranoya - we were really sorry to not have you and A. with us too.-- Next time!

What a wonderful weekend!
We met up on Friday evening and did some sight seeing together - including the Castle and the Fort.
At one point we crossed paths with Moonshine and his family!

The city is full of parakeets! They were really cute, --and they made quite a racket!

Really huge thanks to SwissMS for organizing and hosting! I know it's not easy to do this even when all the guests are in the same town, let alone from around the world. We had a lot of fun, in fact, we're only leaving Malaga tomorrow morning for Seville.
My son loves performing, if only he loved practice even half as much ☺️

Great pictures Casinitaly! I am glad you managed to get a picture of our parakeets. They are noisy, but special! I had a great time hosting everyone. Thanks to everyone who attended! We might have to do this again sometime in the future.

What an awesome idea! I can't believe I just discovered this thread right after the event has passed. It would have been great to spend the week in Spain rather than being bombarded by a hurricane! Maybe next year... smile

Great pictures! I haven't been around much for awhile, but this eve I checked out several of the forums I hadn't looked at in awhile, and found this. Looks like a good time!
