I see what you did there.

Its definately not a stage piano.... the form factor of the fp-90 is what is called a mobile piano... a stage piano has more direct comtrolls over the sound..

Which does not make the fp-90 a less formidable presence... both keybed and sound quallity are of the highest quallity..

For thise wanting a ph-50 stage piano, with lots of controll but witouth the speakers, the RD2000 is on its way...

Since the only thing the dealer in town carries are the low end Yamahas, it was a blind purchase online. So I can't give you a comparison to much else, other than the action is clearly a huge step up from my old PX110, the Korg Triton LE 88 at church, and the Yamaha GHS action. I haven't played a real piano in a while, but my son states that feels better and more grand like than the upright he beats on at school from time to time.

The dynamic range on it is absolutely huge to the point where it seems it is beyond an acoustic. The length and quality of the sustain is quite impressive. Speakers are quite loud, but sound quality is a little bit of a let down. Seems to be a covered feeling to the sound. Tweaking the EQ helps. I'll have to see what it sounds like plugged in externally.

Suggestion to Roland, cycling through all the sounds, the lists stops at each end. If I go to piano sound 15 and want to go back to sound 1, I have to cycle all the way backwards to 1. That makes no sense. I should be able to just advance the button and have it start back at the beginning. If I am on sound one, I should be able to reverse direction and have it go right to 15. This is extra annoying with the 278 sounds of the other category. Can a firmware update fix that?

One of things that made me target the FP90 over an ES8 was the sound library and extra functions. On day one, I am already happy I chose the FP90. There are a few songs we do at church where we could never manage to find a synth or organ sound on the Korg that was anywhere close to the artist version of the song. We would aimlessly cycle through hundreds of sounds and give up in frustration. I've already managed to find pretty much the exact sound that was used on a few of those songs in the FP90. Seems a lot of the groups we cover must use Roland. While it may seem silly, that is exciting stuff. The Korg is getting to the end of its lifespan so another Fp90 for the church may be coming.

Oops. Seems so obvious now; thanks for the correction. I'd still play a red dye free piano, though.

The fastest way to get all the sounds you constantly want is to use the registrations. Although a #protip for you here. If you're on sound 15 in the piano category, I'm pretty sure pressing the plus button then holding it, while you hold the minus button should scroll you through the sounds almost instantaneously.

Bit confused about the availability of the FP-90.

It seems it was available for only a couple of weeks online in late December in the U.S. and since then, out of stock.

Anybody have input on this?

You can buy an FP-90 in Vancouver BC . . .

It may just be selling better than Roland expected, hence "out of stock" in lots of places.

Indeed! I got my first extended play on an FP-90 at the Long and McQuade in Richmond yesterday.

Still going to wait for the RD-2000 to arrive to Roland Canada's head office in Surrey before I make the final decision.

From what I can tell from shopping for one, there was a shipment that came in at the end of January. A lot of those were used to fulfill pre-orders. Sweetwater still has some in stock. ERpiano still has a few white ones in stock and zzounds has a couple left in stock.

I received an e-mail from Sweetwater yesterday that they are in stock.

PMT Review - Roland FP-90

I would strongly recommend downloading the Roland Piano Designer App, and choosing the LX-17 443HZ Vienna Concert preset. This made a massive difference to my FP-90.

For some strange reason the two FP-90 presets are awful!

More updates after using the FP-90 some more. Still not happy with the built-in speakers. They open up and sound better when I turn them up, but I generally need to keep them turned down pretty low except when I take it outside the home. Sound is great in headphones with the 3d effect turned off. What has really impressed me is its expressiveness and responsiveness. I am of limited skills overall, but musicality and expression are a relative strength out of the rest of my skills, even though most of what I play is just pounding chords. Its amazing how much tonal and timbre variation you can get out of it. As I am doing a gradual build through a passage, I can milk out a huge range of expression, with each succeeding note giving me a wonderful change in color. You are not just limited to three or four levels of sound, you can actually shape the relationship between each note to a huge degree. You can definitely connect to the instrument in a way you can't with other digital pianos.

Don't all DPs sound bad through speakers if you turn down the volume? I know my Kawai CA97 does, even though I love it on speakers if they are not turned down. Even an acoustic piano sounds bad if you "turn down the volume" (inside with a moderator/practice felt, or outside if you surround it with lots of acoustic damping material).
