Interesting. On the RD300-NX, if you select a tone and then adjust the EQ or any of the piano designer settings (hammer hardness, top lid, resonances), you do get an asterisk to indicate modification, and you can reset easily by tapping the tone buttons on the right. I assume when you say that tones cannot be altered you mean that the modifications have to happen somewhere else? Cause if you can't change the reverb or tuning or sustains at all, it sounds like that would be about 50 steps backwards from a $200 Medeli keyboard (which I assume is not the case)?

Tones are the foundation sounds in the RD-2000. Yes you can alter them, but you cannot save the changes as a tone, they must be saved as a program. Since we have a limited number of programs, it makes sense to have a program (previously called live sets) with lots of your favorite altered tones inside. I think I would prefer having the ability to change a tone a save it as just a tone, but at present that isn't possible on this instrument.

I would definitely prefer that too! I was sure on the RD-700NX I used to use, you could call a program up from the category buttons and save over that? Same for what the 'one touch' buttons would point to. I hope they can change this with an update!

One big question I do have, please tell me you can choose which instrument/sounds the category buttons goes to? Either a different tone or your own saved program. As in the NX you had 200 user and 200 factory versions of those buttons (also different banks of favourite buttons which pointed to different user live sets) ... But most simply, changing the default category buttons to tones that we want to use is what interests me, as that opens up 9 more options of go to sounds! Having them on the defaults is no use at all because of the way the categories have been changed, there are less of them. So I'd like to make those buttons point to something I want to use. Say make the Pad category button point to Jazz Scat 1!

I suppose "favourites" assigned to the tone selection buttons is the question I'm asking! ... Like the one touch button, but for other sounds within a category. I'm sure the 700's and 800's could do this by just holding down on the category button.

Could someone do me a favor.

I don't have WinZip on my computer and was forced to use another program to unzip the update file for the RD 2000 from Roland's site.

https://www.roland.com/global/suppo...rs/307a92ae-82e2-44c0-a203-31d3e7be0376/

When I downloaded that file earlier today there were five *.bin files in that zip file.

Now when I unzip it using 7-Zip File Manager (a freebie utility), I now just see one file ... RD2000_UPA.BIN

Is that what you see as well?

Thanks ...

Hi Dave,

I have just extracted the content of the zip file and what was extracted to c:\temp is:
C:\temp\rd2000_sys_v102>dir
Volume in drive C is OSDisk
Volume Serial Number is ABCD-EFAB

Directory of C:\temp\rd2000_sys_v102

05/04/2017 21:33 <DIR> .
05/04/2017 21:33 <DIR> ..
05/04/2017 21:33 24 780 800 RD2000_UPA.BIN
1 File(s) 24 780 800 bytes

as you can see the .ZIP file has a folder (rd2000_sys_v102) that contains a single file (RD2000_UPA.BIN)

I think this is the function I'm talking about, although it was slightly different on the RD-700NX I owned. If the 800 can do it, I'm really hoping this has carried over to the 2000 (Why take it away!?) But I can't find it in the manual anywhere which is worrying. As this is something I will need to use a lot of the time, so I can call sounds up that I haven't planned for at the touch of a button!

I've searched the manual and parameter guide and it appears that Scenes, since they can contain whatever sounds you have assigned to the 8 zones, makes the assign to tone feature somewhat redundant. I imagine Roland thought having the ability to have 300 snapshots containing any combination of 8 tones, was better than having each tone button assigned to one by default. Still, I hope I'm wrong or that an update adds that feature back!

But is there anyway to quickly get to one of those stored 300 'snapshots' from the category buttons? Even if I could just make my own favourite sounds as programs and could get a single button press to point to them, that would help... but if you have to press another button to access the scenes via the tone category buttons, that defeats the object of being able to press the button you want quickly!

Those tone category select buttons are there to get to the category, so surely being able to choose which sound of the category it takes you to, is a completely different thing to a saved program or scene, so those two things shouldn't 'take away' the lack of being able to decide which sound you want to get to?

Perhaps someone could help me understand the difference between a program of 8 zones and a scene of 8 zones? From what I remember on my 700-NX. A program (live set) also stored any effects settings you applied, and anything you did to that sound, was stored with it. I've seen a few videos that make it sound like a Scene is something unique, and able to save more info than a program? But from what I remember everything that can be saved in a scene, was able to be saved in a program (Live set) So do 'programs' now store less information or something!?

Programs can't be triggered the same way as scenes (from the tones buttons after pressing the scene button)... though you can change a scene to a program.

It would have been nice if the following manual, a parameter guide, were also enclosed in paper form along with the keyboard.

I ordered the piano from Klundert Muziek in Oisterwijk, it's 15 minutes from where I live.

I've ordered other stuff from him in the past and have a good relationship with him. I don't waste his time when I'm there, I know what I want and simply order it.

I have seen prices very close to that at Dutch sites over here so while it's a good price, it's not exceptional.

wsalembi, where are you located?

I've come across a few things now on the RD 2000 that could have been done better.

The screen, while serving up enough information, could have been angled better. It would have been better if the viewing angle were slightly greater.

The Default Piano, the piano you see and hear and first and also the one that appears when pressing One Touch Piano, has a few notes that bother me. The D, a ninth above Middle C, does not sound great when you play that note staccato. Compare the quality of that particular note to that of Concert Grand.

I might just be picky and on a job playing in real time these little things might go unnoticed.

At any rate, I'm plowing my way though this beast. There's a s***load of piano to learn. smile

Dave Horne, I see that for Roland company the best way to make the betterment of RD-2000 display - it is using the OLED display (e.g.: the NORD producer often boasts with this stuff, and it is realy useful and great stuff).

My issue with the display is not the technology used but the actual angle of the display.

Ben, What is going on with your key action "clicking" story? While I am still waiting for my keyboard coming, I asked the persons who refer to music production industry (retailers, tech suport, etc) and they all affirmatively said about visible solution - your RD-2000 replace or at least to contact the retailer. Futhermore, current owners/ users of RD-2000 have not got similar issues with their keyboards. It means that your case untypical and out-of-spec.

Are you talking about viewing angle? As in, the LCD starts looking washed out or non-contrasty as you move farther/closer to it? An OLED would fix that too.

The problem with OLED is that it's still a ways behind LCD in preventing burn-in. On non-high end smartphones, every OLED display I've seen develops nasty persistence of common elements after just a few months of regular use (so you'll probably end up seeing "Concert Grand" on the display no matter what screen you're browsing).

Years ago I had a personal tour of a well known Dutch company that makes digital church organs. Since they buy items in bulk they tend to use what they already have in stock for the next generation of instruments instead of throwing away perfectly good, if slightly out of date, stock.

That's probably the same thinking at Roland.
