Yes, and they are affected by the volume control.

Playing since April 2010.

Only $40 difference?

In the Netherlands, prices are:

HD599: €249
HD600: €279
HD650: €309
HD700: €599 (price in Germany is around €450...)

So IMHO, de HD598/599, 600, and 650 are all in the same price bracket, and so choosing one is a matter of taste, while the 700 is in another league; at least in the Netherlands.

Here in the US the price at amazon are USD 330 / 380 / 420 for HD600 / HD650 / HD700 so it's quite close.

The headphone plot thickens with the release of the Sennheiser HD660S as the successor to the HD650
Lower impedance, with higher sensitivity (SPL).

published numbers:

Impedance 150 Ω
Connector Stereo jack plug, gold-plated 6.35 mm, unbalanced, 3-pin 4.4 mm, balanced, 5-pin
Frequency response 10 – 41,000 Hz (-10 dB)
Sound pressure level (SPL) 104 dB at 1V 1kHz
Ear coupling Over-ear (circumaural)
THD + N, total harmonic distortion and noise < 0,04% (1 kHz, 100 dB)
Transducer principle (headphones) Dynamic, open
Weight w/o cable Approx. 260 g (without cable)

here's a youtube review:

They are very new, I look forward to trying them in Sennheiser's San Francisco store.

I own both 600s and 650s. For my MP11 I use 600s only. They sound more clear and less bassy, they fit concert grand samples very well.

Hi Iaroslav,

I appreciate your comment because I’m going to receive my MP11SE in a couple of weeks.
I’m leaning toward the HD 600’s. I play & listen to classical and jazz.
Do you use a headphone amp with your MP11 & HD 600’s ?

Cheers,

Jack

No, MP11 drives these headphones perfectly fine.

Be aware that the ability of the internal headphone amp to drive the HD600/650 maybe only marginally adequate. If the amp is designed for only 150 ohm impedance, then the max volume will be lower. I asked Kawai if the MP7 headphone amp could drive a 300 ohm set of cans. Kawai emailed back to say although they wouldn't confirm specs on the headphone amp, the MP7 headphone amp was not powerful enough.

Other users said this is wrong as they have no issues. Others claimed that without a headphone amp, the sound quality itself would not be optimal.

If you intend matching these cans to the MP11, also you too can email Kawai and see what they say about the suitability.

I think that without hearing with and without external amp (a good one), it's hard to say. Bare in mind though that a good amp is driving the cans price closer to the HD800S, so maybe a better approach is to get a good audio-interface with headphone amp. That way, you get better VSt performance and headphone volume for your money.

That’s a great idea. Will do.

re: approaching the price of the HD 800 S… Here in the states, there’s quite a price difference: the HD 600 are $287 on Amazon, and can be found for less on occasion, whereas the HD 800 S’s are more than $1500…

I’ll go to the Sennheiser store and see what my ears tell me.

The early reviews speak to the HD 660 S moving towards the clarity of the HD 800 S
I look forward to forming my own impression.
