I am getting ready to purchase my first console digital piano and can get a brand new Arius 163 for 1350 or CLP 525 for 1999. In looking at the specs, it seems the only difference is more polyphony - 256 vs 192 - for the Clavinova and a different cabinet design. Does anyone have any experience comparing these two? Is there a sound difference? Is the CLP worth 650 more than the Arius? Any other thoughts? Thanks!

525 is just an 163in a bigger console, so I'd get the 163. BTW the 525 seems extremely pricey, shouldn't you find an 535 for 1990?

Idk but in Europe it is 1500€ so even doing the change to $ is less than 1900. I just assumed this kind of equipment is cheaper in the us than in EU.

tnsettlemo: Have you tried either piano? Don't buy until you do.

Snail: Here are the prices from pianobuyer.com
Those with the EP suffix have the higher-price Polished Ebony finish.

tnsettlemo: Snail may be right about the CLP525 price you quoted ($1900). But that depends on which finish you're referring to.

In any case, remember that the dealer's asking price is just his offer. You can (and should) offer less.

Before the YDP-163, the YDP-162 had the GH action, and it was reasonable to go up to the CLP-525 from the YDP-162. Now that the YDP-163 has the same GH3 action of the CLP-525, there is no particular reason for the CLP-525. I've played the YDP-162 against the CLP-525 extensively, and I could not tell any difference between those two then, so I'd imagine there would be absolutely no difference between the CLP-525 and the YDP-163.

The price difference reflect the different warrantees. The CLP-525 has 5-year in home support for parts and labor. The YDP-163 has 3-year repair center support for parts only. You should pay more for better support, right? Also, the CLP-525 is being sold by a more expensive sales person, so cost of sales is also higher for the CLP. There is little difference in the product itself other than that. Polyphony is not an issue.

Thank you! I just wish I could get the off-white color that they offer in Europe!

We would like to physically try out the new Yamaha Arius YDP-163 but cannot find a store in Texas, Louisiana or Utah that has one assembled and on the floor. Any references?

Weight and other features of the console can make sometimes a surprising difference in sound in case the piano is to be used regularly by its own speakers. It is worth to try out both models and compare the experience in that case. For those who are going to use the digital piano with headphones and/or line out mostly this difference can be irrelevant.

I had a surprising experience personally when comparing models of another manufacturer that differ only in the cabinet...

Check out Kawai CN25 or CN35. We looked at Yamahas initially and ended up going Kawai. A lot of people get caught up in the name.

The CN35 is right in that price range, take a look I think it's far better than the 163 or 525, in terms of key action, tone and features.

We actually had the CN25 in my house boxed & wrapped 🎁 and ready for my wife as a Christmas gift when we decided to take one more look at the CN35. Turned out the dealer had a need for the CN25 and offered to take it back and gave us a smoking deal on the CN35. Apparently he had a customer that really wanted the CN25 for his daughter for Christmas and the dealer was out of stock. Did the dealer a favor and lucky us saved $850 off the MAP on the CN35.

Try a CN35. Think you will be pleasantly surprised.

In this price range, Yamaha is inferior to other brands. You should look at the Kawai or the Roland DP603. I just got it's semi-portable counterpart, the Roland FP-90, and I can't believe how smooth the action is, and it sounds superb. The DP603 has the same action as Roland's most expensive digital. Good luck!

Roland FP-90; Yamaha MX49; Pianoteq 5 + most add-ons; 2 Yamaha HS8s; ATH-M50X; Focusrite Saffire 2i2; For performing: Yamaha PSR-S970; FBT Maxx 2a's, Crowne Headset Mic.
