which finish is best? the classiest? the more reliable? the easiest to mantain? the one you prefer? and why?
Ive always dreamed about a high gloss ebony piano(grand or upright), but saw a yamaha c2 the other day at some mall, and the high gloss was all beated up, with chips and dull, so i'm thinkimg to stay away from that finish.
also why the more expensive pianos have those less shiny finish, is that finish more expensive?
any comments are welcomed, need some enlightment.

High gloss or satin is a personal, subjective preference to the individual.
A hand rubbed satin finish is originally high gloss. It is than sanded and then steel wooled (satinized) This is an American finish (Steinway,M&H, Baldwin)
Asian and European pianos that are satin are usually a spray or gun finish which is not hand rubbed but flat satin polyester.(no stridation marks or minimal reflection)
A newer Yamaha C2 is definitely polyester. Polyester will never break down like lacquer.
Polyester is very durable. You can buff scratches out of a polyester piano to near new. That piano must have been in a night club or restaurant
A heavily scratched high gloss piano can be rubbed out to look like a new satin piano though polyester can be difficult to satinize on large areas( scratching glass) Chips and dents on polyester is very expensive to fix in touch up.

100% personal preference
Any finish that is mistreated will look bad. if you don't plan to mistreat your piano, high gloss is fine and durable.
Modern gloss finishes do not become dull.
The only opinion that matters with respect to classiness is your own.

I have the satin matte finish and think it looks very nice, without overpowering the room. One thing that bothered me with the high-gloss finish is seeing the reflection of my hands while I played.

Good topic, and good comments thus far.

When you say ebony, you probably mean jet black. Ebony is a wood, you know, which is not found in modern pianos.

I have the polyester gloss finish on my black piano. One advantage is that this stuff is really a liquid plastic, and it is immune to most sources of damage. So it is totally trouble-free. For example, don't worry about beverage rings after a cocktail party.

However, depending on your outlook, polyester can seem a bit "cheap-looking," and I do like Apple's taste in the matte look.

You let drink-carrying party guests within 50 feet of your piano? And what if Uncle Harry -
who has had three too many - spills his drink inside the piano?

You like to live on the edge, don't you! laugh

I love the high gloss look but imperfections of any sort show up like a sore thumb, especially on a hand finish.

I prefer the ACBB finish ("ANY Color But BLACK")

The Red Piano has the gloss polyester finish on it, but mine is a "working piano" rather than a "shiny decorative element" so I'm much less obsessed about fine scratches in the finish (there aren't any - I don't abuse it!)

Just as long as nobody walks by and writes "PLEASE DUST ME" with their finger on the lid, I'm happy. (I keep a California Car Duster in the closet next to it, to keep the wood as dust-free as possible.)

Inspiration is the act of pulling a chair up to the writing desk.

That's what those square areas on the side of the music desk are for, to hold glasses of wine.

so the high gloss finish can be converted to the satin/mate american finish? have you done that? or anybody?
but anyway the polyester high gloss finish is almost indestructible. did I got it right?
I saw a new 50" upright Palatino with a black satin finish, and sounded very good, but somehow I could see some diference with the others mate/satin finishes I've seen before. it looks just like black paint, probably spray like pianobroker said, is that what you call lacker paint?
Will high gloss be better than that finish?
thanks for all your comments.

Asian and European matte spray finish is impossible to touch up to perfection.
It looks like primer in that their is no reflective quality. It is a cheaper finish in that you do not need to rub it out like a traditional American hand rubbed lacquer finish .It is flat (low or no sheen when you shoot it)

Of course,we've satinized higloss Yamaha or Kawai pianos. It is alot of labor. It is hard to make larger areas look acceptable(lid).Polyester is like glass

Oh, really?! Silly me! How about that? I thought they were for things like music-at-the-ready, maybe a metronome and, perhaps, even a lamp.

Well, I guess I'm never to old to learn! Chardonnay with Chopin, and Bordeau with Bartok, and Rieseling on the Renners - no! that can't be right? Anyway, the possibilities are now endless!

Cheers!
