I'm just interested in your recent favourite recordings of classical piano repertoire. For the sake of argument let's limit it to music composed before 1950 and recorded since 2000. If anyone feels strongly about compositions since then please feel free to chip in.

I already have a library that potentially will satisfy me. But I want to remain open and alert to everyone's favourite new recordings. For my part I'll recommend "The Beethoven Journey - Leif Ove Andsnes" as my personal favourite from the last couple of years.

Please contribute...

OK, how's this:

Mikhail Pletnev's recording of Mussorgsky's Pictures (in his own version) - all the power, brilliance and grandeur of Richter's legendary live recording from Sofia, without any of the latter's wrong notes, plus an extra degree of imagination and imagery.

Oops, just realized that recording dated from before 2000. I must be getting old.......

Ah I haven't heard it, thanks for that (don't worry about pre 2000 :)). I saw him live once (Pletnev) and he was wonderful.

Perahia' Chopin Etudes Opus 10 and 25. Great creativity in everyone. Perfect articulation. But you feel every note has personal meaning. It maybe the best overall recording of these two works.

SF Symphony recording of the Litolff concerto is surprisingly great. Light, bubbly and clear. It's copyright of course, but there's a preview sample available on youtube.

Thanks I have to look these up.

Heather that Peter Takacs recording looks interesting, it was released on SACD, so rather expensive but very high quality, I can't find any samples to listen to but I'll keep looking.

Perahia: Bach French suites and Trifonov: Liszt etudes, both 2016 to my knowledge.

Sokolov: "The Salzburg recital", 2015.

I don't like his Prokofiev, but what he does with Mozart, just as with Couperin and Rameau, is out of this earth. He makes the piano sound like a different instrument, leaving even Gould behind in that capacity, IMHO.

Anything recorded by Valentina Lisitsa? smile

(I can't stand her Philip Glass, though, but that was written after 1950, so it doesn't apply to the OP anyway, whew!)

While you won't get the excellent booklet (essay, really) this way, you can hear the album on Spotify.

I think Hamelin's Godowsky Etudes recording was released around 2000.
