Last month I'm learning Tchaikovksy Op.39 - Children's Album and I think that was a mistake, because most of the time it's way above my current level. Recorded 2 pieces just for history of effort and gonna switch to easier pieces.

No. 29 is my submission to the 44th ABF recital. As additional info for the submission, I translated the relevant part from the German Wikipedia, as quoted below:

The third movement is a bit of a mystery. This is the only instance of a funeral march in Beethoven's piano works. Additionally, and very uniquely, Beethoven added a supplement to the movement title: "sulla morte d'un Eroe" (on the death of a hero). It remains unclear if this hero actually existed (see in comparison the funeral march in the third symphony, which was originally dedicated to Napoleon, who for a time was revered by Beethoven) or if this march rather generally refers to this certain type of "hero" which had just been made popular by the French Revolution. In contrast to the dark and highly severe pathos of the funeral march in the third symphony, this march seems to be quite "theatric" - it is more a manner of play acted or posed mourning. Matching the title, the movement is characterized by dotted note values and in the Trio you can recognize how the piano imitates drum rolls and blares of trumpets.

I'm really impressed by the number of recordings on this thread. I've recorded only about a third of mine. Think for 2017 I'll make a point of recording every one--even if I just do it for myself:-)
I've really been working hard to polish pieces this past 6 months. The "40 Challenge" should complement all the long-term polishing work, but it does seem strange to drop these pieces after a little while. I mind that I can't play them all well, though a few of them have developed into long-term relationships. I'm still struggling with how much to work on these pieces so it feels satisfying.

Hi, I'm an older beginner who hasn't been active in the forum for quite a while! I am going to join for 2017!! Question. Are we trying to maintain each piece at all or just learning, recording and moving on....

I think pretty much maintaining, etc, is up to each person. Some people are using this thread to improve their sight-reading, so I'd guess "maintaining" isn't their goal. Some people would really like to have more repertoire - like me - so I'm keeping them "up" enough to bring them back quickly when I have a gig at an assisted living/memory care place.
But I think the idea is to play lots of music, so that one's skills are used in lots of different places and therefore the skills themselves become more second nature.
There are some links in the first post to a couple of Elisa Milne's posts when she first started this challenge (not for the ABF, we just adopted it) that are interesting to read.
But it's good to see you again.

The participants in this thread re-start counting at the beginning of the calendar year. However, since the goals of this challenge/club have nothing to do with how many pieces you post, but, is more about getting the experience of learning and playing many, many new tunes, you can start in at any time. We will just start a new thread at the turn of the year.
I urge you to take a look at the first post on the first page. It has a link or two to articles expounding the ideas and pedagogical foundations for what we do here. Those articles were very helpful to me as I decided whether or not to participate.
This is my first year at the challenge and I am very happy that I joined. So, join in any time you like. The only thing that happens in January is that we start a new thread, and start counting over again.
