I've been one of the CFX owners here who occasionally lamented the exclusion of half-pedaling in Garritan CFX.

Well - FYI - I received an e-mail yesterday from Garritan with a link to a free update which includes "More Convolution Reverb updates, an additional timbre effect, and Pedaling Enhancements. Yup, you read that right.

This update includes half-pedaling and re-pedaling.

So to CFX owners who have been waiting for this capability, check your in-boxes. (Uhh...You did register, right?) 8-)

They also have released a light version simultaneously,

http://www.garritan.com/blog/

The Lite version is $80 and uses sample stretching to keep the size down.

Can you please share the process, web site, any links in the email at all on how users can get their hands on the update?

See:

https://store.makemusic.com/Downloads/Default.aspx?p=1

You have to fill in some options. I filled in:

Garritan, Windows, CFX

... to get the download page. Download took about 1 minute.

From the page:

Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX Concert Grand Update for Windows

This updater is a free download for registered owners of the Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX Concert Grand. Included in the updater are:

* Support for partial pedaling (with the use of a continuous sustain pedal) and re-pedaling
* A new timbre effect that emulates the tone quality of other keyboard instruments
* Several new convolution reverb spaces
* Bug fixes and other improvements

I should note that any registration that you may have for Garritan CFX is actually with MAKEMUSIC.com.

I will try the upgrade and see how it goes.

I downloaded the installer. It took just a minute or two. But it indicates the package is 123 mb in size.

I ran the installer and it indicates that it will install version v1.009 of Garritan CFX.

"CFX Concert Grand Revision History

Version 1.0.0.9 August 18th 2016
CFX update. Includes partial pedal and repedal features, additional convolution impulse responses, more convolution reverb control, improved bass note release times, and other features and fixes.

Version 1.0.0.8 June 23th 2015
Uses updated ARIA Engine

Version 1.0.0.7 May 5th 2014
First Public Release.
"

***

The next screen indicates at least 245.7 MB of free disk is required.

***

I am a little concerned at this point because I have the program files on my C: drive and the CFX data files on my D: drive.

***

Success!

Well - the patch didn't apparently need to access or update the data files as it ran normally to completion... So I would consider the notice that 245.7 MB as a little misleading. That is the amount of disk space needed for a complete installation. The patch only affects the VST (.dll) files and program related files.

I'll report how the patch plays asap.

I started it up and it loaded up like normal.

I did receive a notice that this was the first time running Garritan CFX (not true, of course), and it asked me to set certain .midi, sound card, parameters. I didn't touch anything and it still ran and functioned normally. Sound was as usual.

AAAAaaaaahh. Pedaling. Much less sensitive to minor pedal movements. The pedal really felt like an on/off switch before, and it was abrupt. Now it seems to be much more forgiving. Others will need to comment about half-pedaling capabilities.

But from my perspective, I'm happy!

I should also note that even though I am a registered user, I did not receive an e-mail that announced this update. But I was able to get the patch easily through the makemusic.com website.

You can check the version that you have installed by clicking on the INFO button at the top of the Aria player window.

The Garritan version installed is: v1.009
The Aria Engine version is: v1.901 (for windows x64) version

Your results may differ if you are using the 32bit version of Aria/Garritan, or Macintosh versions...

That's a great news! I would most probably buy it but I would like people to confirm all possible half-pedal scenarios work. A week and something ago I purchased Vintage D only to discover a very basic scenario of half-pedaling doesn't work ( see this thread ). I've contacted them and they told me they were going to look at the issue with an associate who is responsible for writing the scripts. Hopefully they will fix it.

So, can you test the following scenarios:

Half-pedaling
1. Press the pedal fully and hold it. Play a note and release it (the pedal is still held). Now begin releasing the pedal very slowly. You should hear how the note decay gets progressively shorter. (This one works on Vintage D.)

2. Play a note and hold it. Press the pedal fully and hold it too. Release the note (the pedal is still held). Now begin releasing the pedal very slowly as in previous test and observe the decay getting progressively shorter. (This one DOESN'T work on Vintage D as well as the further tests)

1.1 and 2.1 - Do the same tests but when the pedal is at the half pedal position and the decay is already quickened, press it back fully and observe the decay becomes normal from that point on. Start releasing the pedal again slowly and observe if the decay gets progressive again.

Half-pedaling with repedaling:
3. Play a note (preferably in the bass region) and release it. Very quick after the release press the sustain pedal fully down. You should be able to catch the not-yet decayed note. Now begin slowly releasing the pedal as in tests 1 and 2 and observe half-pedal works.

3.1 Similar to 3, but when you catch the note with the pedal, very briefly release the pedal and press it fully again. Observe the note being re-caught and then release the pedal slowly to observe half-pedaling is working.
3.1.1. Similar to 1.1 and 2.1 - when the pedal is not fully released, press it back fully and observe the decay gets normal then again release slowly and observe correct half-pedaling.
-----
As a side note all those tests work on all digital pianos with half-pedal support. Why is that difficult to reproduce in software is beyond me.

CG, it passed all tests for me. I ought to say that by the time I got to test 3 I found actually implementing the tests by physically controlling the pedal rather demanding so instead I drew the action in the Cubase editor allowing precision control of the robotic foot.

dire tonic, thanks, I'll most probably buy the CFX then. It is without a doubt the best sounding sampled piano to me and it was the lack of half-pedal and repedaling that stopped me buying it. I am afraid it won't run on my very low-power Retina MacBook 12 though frown Vintage D works but most probably the CFX won't... I am considering buying the new MacBook Pro to use it also for my software development job, so I have one more reason to spend the ca$h on a new laptop.

I think you are wrong about the sample stretching. I thought they used sample stretching too, when reading this:

Quote
Timbre Effect
CFX Lite uses a higher or lower sample than the pitch you play (depending on the knob setting) and transposes it, producing the altered timbre at the correct pitch. When the Timbre Effect knob is at 50%, you’ll experience the natural timbre of the sampled Yamaha CFX concert grand piano. Turn the Timbre Effect knob above 50% to give the piano a more plucked sound and turn the Timbre Effect knob below 50% for a less percussive sound. This can be used to emulate the George Martin technique utilized on “In My Life”.

However I've read it twice and it is my understanding that this is an additional effect you may use if you want, i.e. to transpose all samples up or down: for all the keys you take the samples from say 1 semitone below and replay them so the pitch is raised by 1 semitone. You can do the opposite as well, with the intent of creative timbre experimentation. However it is implied that there is still 88-key sampling.

Yes, this looks to be - and sounds identical in effect with - the so-called 'Timbre Shift' feature as deployed in Ivory ACD. It's part of the fully blown library rather than a 'lite' feature...that's my understanding, anyway (although the feature could of course be included in a lite version).

- well, now having read the blurb, it looks like the 'lite' version is a bargain. It only offers the close mic, excluding the Abbey Road ambience. Had that option been available at the outset, that's the one I'd have bought. I've found, in practice, I much prefer the flexibility of reverb and ambient plugins to ambient samples which I usually mute. Others may prefer to have the full range of options if there's no upgrade path.

Dire, do you use any of the player perspectives? I'm wondering if they sound good with headphones compared to the close one? If not such a big deal I would go for the lite version. I haven't seen the interface and am not familiar with that perspective thing though. It seems like you can choose between classic, modern and player and within each of those you also have various mic placement sources (close, mid, far for classic and close-far for the others) and you can mix the sources, is this right? What's your favorite perspective/mix for monitors and headphones?
