Hello,

I have bought a new digital piano (Kawai ES8) and I would like to replace my Sennheiser 595 which I have had for 6 years with some new Beyerdynamic.

I have to choose between the 770 (which are closed studiophones) and the DT 880 and/or DT 990. Both 880 and 990 have 32 Ohm impendance.

I am not sure about the 770 because they are closed headphones. I think I would prefer opened or semi opened headphones.
Can anybody give me a feeling about these headphones? Any pro´s or con´s?

I have Beyers. I always prefer open phones. Better sound, more comfortable.

Agreed on open cans in general. As far as these specific Beyers, I've heard the 770, which I liked, and the 880, which I didn't. The 880 I found too harsh, although it was well-built and comfortable, but I didn't care for the sound.

And any comparison between the 880 and 990 possible?

be warned the earcups of the beyers are much smaller than your sennheiser, only buy them if you know they fit.

Belger, I have the 990's. They are 250 ohm, (open) not 32 ohm. Huge difference. However, I replaced my Sennheiser 598 with them because of the high impendance. I have a CA97 and the Sennheiser's were too loud. The 990's high impendance are perfect and very comfortable. I also like the shorter cord.

I also have the 250 ohm DT 990 - and agree that it's comfortable and sounds good. The treble is a bit brighter than on my Sennheiser 598's. (Btw, there is a 32 ohm version of the 990.)

Both versions have the 32 Ohm. I am afraid that the 250 Ohm versions do not work that good on the DP. The Sennheiser had 50 Ohm which was quite good.

As far as I could read on the internet, the 880 are more linear, the 990 beeing somewhat more U shaped (more bass, smaller middlerange, higher treble).

I just ordered both. The 880 edition 32, and the 990 edition 32.
I will test both and then decide which one is best for the DP.

Let us know how they all sound with the ES8 when they arrive. I use HD-595 with my ES7 and it sounds really good. Would be interesting to hear how they compare to the Beyers. I'm wondering why you would like to replace them?

I just want something new after almost 6 years. And a second pair of headphones would be good if somebody wants to listen together with me.

I have the 770's (32ohm I think) and they sound very good with my CA97. The advantage of closed cup is the surrounding noise is cut sharply as is the piano noise to those in the surroundings, so ideal if your piano is in the living room where others might be watching TV etc.

I have no surrounding noise. I think open headphones are more confortable if you use them over a longer period of time.

I will have them tomorrow and give you guys a feedback.

I have sennheiser HD25s and I have just purchased a set of DT880 250ohm.
for me the HD25s sound much better but are really uncomfortable compared to the DT880s. I would imagine for most people the DT880s would be too bright sounding.

I have an ES8 and I play sometimes an ES7.

I have a DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm.

The DT 770 is OK for the ES8 but the I do some tuning (voicing, etc.) in order to have less low frequency sound and I turn off reverberation. I am able to play among noisy people... during hours.
Comfortable but a little bit to warm for summer.
It is not impossible that another choice could be better. (not closed ?)

With the ES7 I found the sound not very good, it seems better with a Sennheiser wifi. (not logical)

I have been using the same Beyer DT770 32ohm closed headphones for 28 years. In that time I bought replacement foam earpads from Beyer and had to mend a break in the lead inside the left assembly.

Closed headphones are essential if using phones during multi-track recording, e.g. Piano then acoustic guitar or/and voice.

I received both headphones for testing. First thing was, that I unfortunately did not receive the DP as the delivery company (GLS) did not come as confirmed via mail. So unfortunately I could only test on my small stereo system. And this system does not have enough punch even for the 32 Ohm versions...

In comparison until now: The 880 have a more linear leveling. Very clear but not very voluminous for my taste. The 990 had more bass. The outcome is for me a more voluminous sound, feels more plastically (sorry, don´t know the correct word in English).
As soon as I have my new DP I will be able to do a correct testing.

In Tokyo, electronics stores have massive headphone departments with hundreds of models to try. Those Beyerdynamics were among the few I always came back to.

I thought both the 880 and 990 were very comfortable and well made. They are both popular and excellent sounding headphones. Excellent price-performance.

The sound on both is enjoyable but I found the 880 to sound less enhanced at the low and high ends so personally liked it more.

Some of the issues you are having is running very good headphones from a marginal built-in amp. It makes comparisons difficult. Bass might be insufficiently powered, resulting distortion could mar the sound at higher frequencies, etc. Good headphones shine when matched with a good amp.

An inexpensive headphone amp could improve your sound significantly. No guarantees. Why don't you take a read through www.head-fi.org for some ideas. You don't need a combo DAC/amp, just a dedicated amp. A portable amp can be inexpensive and battery operation has some potential advantages (although you will need to recharge or replace the batteries frequently which is inconvenient). A small amp powered by the mains could be more powerful and better sounding. You can get a decent amp for under US$100...
