I am always dreaming of the shiney new books of sheet music I want to buy,but I currently have enough to last me another four years. Do you also find your eyes are bigger than your stomachs when it comes to purchasing sheet music?

Yes.

I raided the Baerenreiter website and two music stores for super advanced and technical music books.

Good thing my current sheet music store is almost an hour away.

On average, a single piece of digital sheet music is 150 kb......I have 500gb worth.

At some point it was ridiculous: Not only did I have to get the whole output of my favorite composers (in several editions) but also a little bit of something from everyone...Now I'm buying less, but always when there's a good deal smile

I just bought three books yesterday smile from sheet music plus. I have VKgoeswild's Stairway to Heaven, but it hurts my wrist to try to play it, small hands. So I bought three different books that have the song to see if I could get one a little more suited to me.

Lol....I have to show my hub this thread..he thinks he has to buy storage unit for my music...I borrow from the library too. I am trying to get them digital now onto my iPad Pro, but I have a good collection even though I am only 4 year old piano student...and loads of theory books, scales , that I still haven't had the time to read.

Yes, but all Easy Piano. And I am limited because I am cheap and want a bargain. Bookman's in Phoenix sells at a discount, so I'm spoiled and limited by what they have, new and used. So, maybe I will have a re-kindling of my passion to buy when I start to need more advanced stuff.

For the moment, I am in a buying hiatus because I started to play lead sheets. This is much easier for me, beginner-intermediate, to play, as I am limited to READING the music, can't memorize, and there is much less work in reading notes (chords) for the left hand. Need to buy fake books, but can't find good buys on any, so I'm using the Great Gig Book off the internet, and simplifying the chords as needed, and the Easy Fake Book which I picked up from Amazon.

Having all this sheet music has its down sides. When you get an urge to play a particular song, you have the problem of where is it in all this material, or you want to compare versions. Or you are somewhere and see sheet music for sale, question is, what do you already have?

So, I have made up excel files and have them on my smart phone for:
1) Books I have
2) Individual sheet music I have
3) Songs in the books and sheets I have (almost complete)
4) Songs in the entire set of Sheet Music Magazine which I have about 98% of.

I'm technically very capable. I love my piano and love tinkering with it.

I admit that I am powerless over sheet music and that my life has become unmanageable.

... and I don't care and won't change. smile

Sheet music is for all time (I'd say for eternity, but nobody knows how long eternity is).

A few months ago, I 'discovered' a folder of ancient, yellowed sheet music that I bought from the local music store's bargain bin box when I was an impoverished student - many, many, many decades ago. In it were juicy morsels like In a Persian Market and In a Monastery Garden, along with other salon music much beloved of the Victorians. Easy to sight-read, and full of memorable tunes. I'd forgotten all about them, but the nostalgia when I played through them was, er, nostalgic.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON9-eCStoFU

These days, I mainly buy only contemporary sheet music, because I've got almost everything else worth playing by all the great and not-so-great composers, which I dig out every now and then to sight-read and play through. Though, I've only ever learnt a small fraction of what I've got, the rest are worth their weight in bronze, just for reading through on a rainy (or sunny) day.

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

My sheet music buying was out of control for a while. Oddly enough, once I had acquired all the sheet music ever produced, my buying slowed down. smile

Lol. That's a good one (@Ralph).

Mine is definitely out of control. I have several boxes filled with sheet music and now I have two piano benches and I swore to myself that I would never fill them with piano sheet music. I told myself the only thing I want in that piano bench (one of them anyways) is my iPad Pro. So one day I couldn't find my iPad Pro. I open the piano bench and underneath all of the sheet music that I said I was never going to put in there was the iPad Pro !

So much for that experiment !

Guilty as charged. I own more sheet music than I will ever be able to play in this lifetime, but there is always one more piece that I just have to have.

Yes, I'm always looking for sight-reading fodder, but my eyes are bigger than my fingers sometimes.

(I tell my teacher that I practice sight reading during the week, and she invariably retorts that "you don't practice sight reading, you just do it." Still, I can't help saying "practicing sight reading," because it always feels like… Practice.)

I found a cache of "Sheet Music" magazine piano issues at a local thrift store, and lugged the entire armful up to the cashier. Now, there is some rule of the universe that thrift store purchases are always under $15... no matter how many items you buy, no matter what the prices… it's due to some quirk of math that only happens in thrift stores… so I patiently waited to hear what paltry sum the cashier would request… the words "seventy-six dollars" came as a bit of a shock… I looked again at the $1.89 price tag on each magazine, and contemplated the height of the stack... short but must be very dense... Well OK!

I'm sure someone, at a yard sale somewhere, is selling a giant stack of "Sheet Music" magazines, $1 for the whole lot. But not for me...
