I'm on the e-mail list for PDQ Bach, and guess what, folks:

From this fall through next spring, there will be a string of performances of the great "Concerto for Simply Grand Piano and Orchestra."

I wouldn't necessarily be making a big thing of it, except that the pianist is...... Mr. Biegel. smile

The schedule:

September 24, 2016 – Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Denver, Colorado
October 29, 2016 – New Philharmonia Orchestra, Newton Massachusetts
January 13 and 14, 2017 – Austin Symphony, Austin, Texas
January 29, 2017 – Traverse Symphony Orchestra, Interlochen, Michigan
March 18 and 19, 2017 – Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, Fargo, North Dakota
March 25, 2017 – Philharmonia Northwest, Seattle, Washington
April 2, 2017 – South Florida Symphony Orchestra, Boca Raton, Florida
April 4, 2017 – South Florida Symphony Orchestra, Key West, Florida
April 5, 2017 – South Florida Symphony Orchestra, Miami, Florida
April 6, 2017 – South Florida Symphony Orchestra, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
April 22, 2017 – North Mississippi Symphony, Tupelo, Mississippi
May 12, 2017 – Portland Columbia Philharmonic, Portland, Oregon
May 14, 2017 – Portland Columbia Philharmonic, Gresham, Oregon

This sounds simply grand! Congratulations on getting to premiere and tour with this piece. I'm sure it'll be quite successful and a lot of fun. I hope a CD or DVD is made, I'd buy it.

Very nice new PDQ Bach piece, which in itself is enough to celebrate -- but this was more, because Jeffrey is completely in the spirit of this music. Great fun (including that he was clearly having fun!), and, need we say, wonderfully played.

It was great to have the chance to meet and chat with him too!!

Jeffrey also played two encores. The first was Chopin's Waltz in C# minor (Op. 64 No. 2). I kept expecting that it would veer off into some PDQ Bach-like takeoff, but he played it for real, beautifully, with many creative and unexpected touches. The second encore was a piece I'd never heard, by a composer that I was barely aware was a composer (in addition to being a highly noted writer): "Rush Hour in Hong Kong" by Abram Chasins, a delightful and freaky 1-and-a-half-minute tour de force. (I needed him to tell me what it was afterwards.)
