I like those "Lavish, cynically Russian harmonies." grin

"New performances of scarcely played works" are fun - even if somewhat out-of-tune and slow. At least the music is being heard.

Lovely work, I didn't know he wrote anything besides Islamey.

He was a wonderful composer! His etude in D-flat major is another great piece.

There's lots of Balakirev's stuff that's not performed, including the fantastic, and I mean absolutely gorgeous, Bb minor sonata (just listen to the last movement !!). I'm so glad Steve gave us this performance. ALL Balakirev piano music is difficult, and this rendering is coherent and true to the spirit of the piece. Thank you!

Mili's mazurkas are not trivial works. The fifth is incorporated into the sonata - or maybe it was the other way around. My favorite is the sixth in Ab, which I performed in my youth. Best performance I know is Ronald Smith's, which I present for y'all's enjoyment:
