Kawai CA97 creaking pedals #2569419

Hi all,

I just unloaded my new Kawai CA97 this past Friday and have been really enjoying the improved sound and keyboard action over my old Casio. However, all of the pedals make a creaking and cracking sound as they are depressed -- it's pretty distracting and I don't think it's normal. It sounds like it's coming from the inside of the piano, between the soundboard and pedals.

Before anyone says anything, yes, the pedal support bolt is down.

I have attached a video of the problem -- ignore the terrible quality, apparently it's dark in here but the important part is the sound. Definitely different from the damper noise simulation which I can hear but can't be heard in the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7q3hT9RBH8&feature=youtu.be

I guess the question is, is this normal? I don't remember hearing this when I tried it out in the store.

Thanks

I don't think it is normal if the pedal support already firmly touches the floor.

Okay, so almost as soon as I started this thread, I had the brilliant idea to check on the evenness of my floor. I live in an old house in Cambridge MA and sometimes furniture suffers from not really touching the ground on all fours ... anyway, the piano appeared to be fine, but somehow I noticed that the front right of the piano seemed to be very slightly too low. I rolled up some cardboard and put it underneath and the issue is gone. It was only about a quarter inch of cardboard, so I am a little surprised that it caused such an irritating noise.

Should have checked before starting the thread but I guess this knowledge is out there now if anyone else has the same issue.

I have been meaning to post a similar question so I am delighted to read the above.
I got a CS8 in June, and while the pedal creaking is not as bad as you describe it is certainly noticeable. In particular, I play with headphones on a lot, and the noise is really obvious then as you can imagine. Doesn't bother me of course, but undoes a fair amount of the benefit the headphones are supposed to offer everyone else in the house!
I will take a close look at floor levels this evening ...

barbaram, is the pedal support bolt attached below the pedals, and is it fully extended to the bottom of the floor?

Kind regards,
James

I have cracking pedals in my CA97 too, and the support bolt is, in fact, fully extended.

Hi James, thanks for picking up on this.
I checked it last night and I was able to extend the pedal bolt a little bit more, but there is still a fair amount of creaking.
There is quite a lot of "give" in the wooden floor in that room. Also, though, I noticed that the bolt itself is coming down right at the join between two boards (on the long side), which could be an extra factor.
We'll try moving the piano slightly so it's not coming down right on the join and see if that helps, but any other comments/suggestions very welcome

barbaram and Brometeo,

If you notice the pedal board creaking, despite the pedal support bolt being fully extended to the floor, I would recommend giving your Kawai dealer a call for assistance.

Kind regards,
James

Sorry for the delay in updating, I was away last week.
I moved the piano slightly with my husband and it improved the situation quite a lot
