Hello,
my 2 daughters have been playing the piano for 4 years and I'm in the process of buying a piano.
I have the budget to look after Kawai K15, K200 pianos and B1, B2 Yamaha pianos.
If I find a good deal also a K300 and B3 could fit my budget.

My questions are the following:

1. Is there any difference between Kawai K series pianos and KX series ? For eg. is a K 15 and KX 15 the same piano ?

2. I did not find any real ranging of the pianos, only the expensive, the better. Almost every review gives only the pros.
I would like to hear some opinions, defining the target buyer. For eg.: Kaway XX is meant only for a beginner. After few years you would need to buy a better piano, etc...

3. Do you have any experience with Kawai ND 21 ?
It costs the same as K 200.
It should be a cheap version of 121cm range piano, with cost reduced components, like lacking of soft closing system. But was the cost reduced also on components, which affect piano's performance (for eg. low cost strings, hammers, etc.) ?

Thanks
Andrej

As nobody answered my questions, I'm answering them myself.
Maybe someone will find my answers useful.
A few days ago I went to a Yamaha & Kawai piano dealer asking the same questions. I don't play the piano so I took the teacher with me.

1. There is a difference between Kawai K and KX series. KX are cheaper, made in China. At least for EU market, K series are made in Indonesia (K 15 , K 200) and in Japan (K 300). For eg. K 15 and KX 15 are also different measures, and K 15 has better components than KX 15.

2. I still miss the reviews, which would point the buyer to the right piano range. According to vendor's and my teacher's opinion, a K200 would be enough, if my daughters decide to go to secondary piano school (primary piano school is 6 years, secondary is 4 years).

3. Kawai ND21 has the same height as K300, but it can't compare with K300. It uses the cheaper external components (cheaper finish, no soft close system, etc.). What is more important is, that also the componets, which affect piano performance are cheaper.
Performance wise it can be compared to K2 or K 200, but it has a little more bright sound, which (according to the vendor) will also get brigther with time. I would still chose K2 or K200.

At the end I end up buying a K300...
Best regards
Andrej

Good information, thank you.

What about a Kawai upright KL-502? Would anyone know details and/or have experience with this model? Any comments would be very much appreciated.

dreja, congratulations, the K300 is a good choice.

Through a school, over the years I've played on many Kawai uprights. My favorite of those was a K-5. I spent a lot of time on a K-15, the smallest and cheapest of the lot, yet when my teacher would demonstrate a passage on it, it sounded like heaven.

Yes, a K200 is a nice instrument and would likely be enough for a decade or forever. However, I think the difference to the K300 is still significant. There is just "more" in bass and discant. For me, the difference from K300 to K500 is not as big as from K200 to K300. Congrats!

There are really a lot of different Kawai models in the used market, like BL and then brands they had like Märchen and Diapason. A piano dealer who has a number of them said that while the exterior may differ in places "inside they're all Kawai". Of course, only the new models have the Millenium III action.

Kawai CN35. Daughter wanted a piano, so we got one. Now who'll learn faster? ;-)
