I want a digital piano that feels and sounds as close to an acoustic piano as possible for under $1000. From my limited knowledge that means, console, weighted keys, good tone.

What can you offer? smile

The same as you want is already a discussion in progress here for portables - DPs under $1000

PS- for console model, given your price range, you could add furniture stand most portable models have as optional accessory , or look at Casio PX760 / 780 and Yamaha YDP142 (ps- or the newer 143 that is a bit out if your range) for models formally positioned as consoles.

You want a lot for your money! smile
You'll have to look at the Casio PX-160, Casio PX-360, Yamaha P-45, Yamaha P-115 or Kawai ES100.
Alternatively consider a Roland FP-30.

There is no such thing.

The only piano that sounds like an acoustic piano is an acoustic piano.

If you're willing to give up the sound quality, just try out some digital pianos and pick one.

You can look around for a Yamaha P155. Dealers and pianists alike still recommend and love that digital piano. Since the P255 is now out, the 155 can surely be found for an excellent price!

There's a P45, P115 and P255. All are sold simultaneously at three different price points.

Considering the p255 came out about 2 years ago, I'd be expecting a very good discount.

Lol! Always. Does this mean I should change my budget? Hmmmmm. I'm just throwing out numbers here. Will check out these models-- looks good.

OK, just looked at this on Amazon. So, is it supposed to go on an X-stand? Are there other stands? I don't love X-stands, cause it seems like they're awfully unstable! Like if I put my weight in it, I'm worried it would just topple over...

Have you tried the GHS keybed? A lot of general music stores have it in the DGX650, and I recommend trying it before you buy, if you can.

The GHS action is not the best. I think you're better off with the Casio PX-160 for under $1k. You can get a stand with that that is table style and matches the piano.

Makes me wonder why people even dare to consider buying a digital piano unheared and untouched....

Even with near to none experience you should trust on your ears and your fingers about what feels pleasantly to you... Just sit down behind a few digital piano's and you should be able to say what you like and dislike...

If that is possible, of course. But sometimes it's not. I've bought sight-unseen before, and I've been aware of the retailer's return policy just in case. smile

My mother has the 140 (the predecessor to this model) and I have the 160 (the 16X line is one step up from the 14X, although at this point I can't remember what's different, the speakers? the half-pedal?)

Anyway, the Arius pianos are very nice instruments, reliable, they look nice and and sound nice. Also, the furniture-type stand is very stable and you can get used to sitting in a way that's similar to what you'll have at an acoustic piano.

I bought my first Yamaha digital piano in a store (so I played it first) and then I bought the Arius 160 having played my mother's 140, but without trying out the 160. At the time, we had just returned to the US, we didn't have a car, and I needed a piano that would show up on my doorstep.

The Yamaha Arius fit that bill and I was not disappointed. smile

So although buying sight-unseen may not be ideal, I can understand how it happens.

I think the main evolution between an old Arius an a newer one is the tone generator. The first tone generator is AWM and can't mix two samples then there are some gaps when we play a little louder and the piano use another sample. I think that newer tone generator (CF sampling) is smarter (I have read in the DPBSD that there are no layer switch with a Clavinova - CLP330 - which use CF sampling : "Smooth timbral variation with no visible or audible layer switching (to me; however the owner reports bad and audible layer switching")

I was more thinking about what the differences are between the different Arius models/levels, not between newer and older versions. There are 14X, 16X, and 18X, I can't remember if there was a 180 when I purchased my 160, but if there was it was probably over my budget. But I compared specs between the 140 (which I'd played and liked) and the 160 (which I'd never played) and decided to get the 160. I'm sure there was a reason for that decision, but at this point 7-8 years later, I can't remember what it was.

Nevertheless, I would imagine that the differences remain between each model in the line, so there would be similar differences between the 143 and the 163 as there were between the 140 and the 160.

That could be wrong of course, but for Hello My Name Is, if you're planning on getting an Arius, I would recommend carefully comparing the specs, you might decide one level up to be the better instrument for you.

For example, the 160 only allows you record one piece at a time on the on-board memory. This is a bigger pain than I would have imagined, and if going up one level to the 16X or 18X model allows more options for recording, than that would be one strong vote in favor of the more expensive model IMO.

Between models : mainly amplification and keyboard (14x have GHS, 16x have GH... excepted the 163 : GH3. 182 and 183 have not been made). 16x have also damper resonance.

Frederic/Shirokuro: Oh boy! I'm not sure I'll ever use the other functions of the keyboard, if that's what you all are describing. O_O
On my current keyboard, the only thing I find useful is the button that automatically transposes. Nice to have when a hymn is written too high for the singers.

Morodiene-- what's different about the GHS action and the Casio?
