Recently, I have been looking online for a violin. There were two online stores I could do business with, both had comparable instruments and a very generous return policy, so it was unlikely I would get stuck with an instrument I didn't like.

Well, in my travels doing research, I noticed that one of the sellers had a habit of going to online forums and spamming them with their ads. Well, that turned me right off.

I guess I don't have to tell you I did not buy my violin from them, huh? laugh

Ken,

Are you certain that the dealer was not advertising by arrangement just like on this forum?

Ken,

I can HIGHLY recommend Stringworks. I've bought two cellos through them and have nothing but praise.

Any recommendations of what to do or not to do when buying a violin? My daughter will probably be starting lessons soon.

Same as a piano, really. I researched the heck out of mine before making my final decision. Bought a 2013 Andreas Eastman VL200, quite a lovely instrument. Ebay worked out really well for me, got a super outfit: violin, case, bows, shoulder rest, etc.

I'm also pretty picky with the types of places I buy from and will decide not to deal with someone over spam or other unscrupulous behavior.

But if I were violin shopping I don't think I'd do it online, as small violin shops seem to be special places. Back in my music school days I liked to take trips with friends to music stores that specialized in various instruments, even if I didn't play them. The most awe-inspiring of these was a violin shop in an old house, somewhere around Columbus, if I recall correctly. Hopefully it's not the spammy retailer, but from what I remember I doubt it, if it's even still around. (Another favorite was an acoustic guitar specialty shop in Cleveland which closed quite some time ago).

Yes, because the forum was owned by another dealer. In essence, he came on his competition's forum and hawked his wares. Pretty gutsy.. laugh

The new violin is due to arrive on Wednesday. I think I have 45 days to approve it or return it for a full refund. They tell me they do not give out many refunds. By the way, I bought from the guy whose forum got spammed by the competition.. He has a pretty comprehensive business, with free lessons online and everything. For all the free lessons and the like, his website is www.fiddlerman.com

Little local shops are great, too. There is a local buy I bought my other violin from and the instruments he sells are like his children to him. He takes a lot of care on them. I called him and told him what I wanted and he literally hand picked a used one and set it up special for what I wanted.

One thing I can tell you, be VERY careful buying a $100.00 new violin. You do get what you pay for.

These guys got me interested in playing violin. By the way, the song they are going to play was written by a relative of mine..
