Wow, that was much better than I expected. I understand Ives better now. Also, you are an excellent pianist.

The second Ives recording there is the only one that really spoke to me. I could see that he was really trying to put a lot of power and energy into his music. To play his music, it must not be possible to relax.

America's greatest composer?

Aaron Copland (my vote as a non-American who has traveled all over the world and visited the USA many times). He is the one mainstream composer whose music is instantly recognizably 'American' to all people around the world who're familiar with Western music. thumb

His music may be the most Americana, but I don't think he's fit to lick Ives' boots in terms of greatness haha (Copland is great too)..

OK, I admit that Ives's music is weirder than Copland's......... wink

You have to like Ives because he is the greatest American composer.

Ives was a visionary, sure, but not the greatest American composer. Gershwin is undoubtedly the "greatest", but I would personally put the songwriters above Ives too.

I think that for example on this list http://www.gramophone.co.uk/feature/top-10-american-composers I would put more than one before Ives. As you say he was a visionary, but not the greatest for me either.
