Thank you spanishbuddha. This appears to be a pretty serious case of shipping damage. I'll reply to the customer over in that thread.

I won't be caulking anything. My guitar tech said "IF" I do anything to do it so it's reversable like putting a paper shim in there. I won't do anything until I see if this one needs to be returned.

Hi

Warm grand : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtaxL8DRTYk

Really cool !

I've just bought JBL LSR 305. Warm sound too.
I find the built-in speakers really horrible !

how does the ES8 compare to the CA17 please ?

the CA17 is not that much more in the UK (£250 or so) - would I be right in thinking hasn't got the very latest piano samples of the ES8 but has a better action - did I read right that the CA17 has same action as the VPC1 ?

somehow the CA17 seems better value ?

even compared to the VPC1 - you get a full cabinet and built in tones for £400 more than a VPC1 ?

or am I missing something ?

many thanks

The SK-EX concert grand and EX concert grand samples are the same in the es8 and ca17, afaik. The es8 additionally has the sk-5 chamber grand (same as the ca67 and ca97).

Yes, the action of the ca17 is the same as the vpc1's. The latter has some features (like individual touch curves) that make it a perfect midi controller that the ca17 lacks.

The cs8 has more rhythm and accompaniment options than the ca17, I think.

But yes, the ca17 is very good value if playing piano with piano voices is your main goal.

thanks for the reply JoBert

I have a Yamaha MOXF6 already and a PC with Pianoteq (bought this last week) and a pair of JBL305s - all of which the CA17 would be plugged into

the only reason I'm looking for something with built in tones is that whilst I love playing around with the MOXF, Pianoteq etc - I want a piano I can "un-plug" when I'm finished and the rest of the family can just use as a Piano - turn on and go so to speak

Can anyone recommend a good keyboard stand and gig bag for the ES8? I've found a few things online, but I wanted to see what others have found works for them.

Thanks!

I got the Kawai-brand "travel bag" back when it was ES7. It works well. Kawai did a good job of using a strong rubber strap at the top/pulling end of the bag, sturdy zippers and the wheels have held up well so far especially after repeated sideways stress over uneven surfaces.

It works with MP7 and ES8.

If you are on the east side of the pond, Kawai UK has their own similar but different travel bag with wheels.

This is the very same one I was looking at, I didn't know if there were any other good alternatives though. Can you recommend a good keyboard stand for gigs?

Also, does anyone know of a keyboard dust cover that would work with the ES8 while it has the sheet music stand attached? It would be nice to keep it free of dust while sitting at home.

As for alternatives that are similar but cost less, in the states, brand name Gator has a couple two or 3 models in slighly different models for 88-key DPs and cost approximately $150. In Europe and there abouts , see this link

http://eshop.ortola-sa.es/sqlcommer...a=298&codProducto=0784&cPath=113

There are alternatives that cost more because they are hard ( and heavy) cases.

I use double-x stand for holding 50 pound portable DP "slab", fairly inexpensive, search on web for OnStagePerformance or similar brands. This suits me fine but some people prefer Z-style stand which are more expensive, provides more leg room and less likely to tip.

Hello everyone,

New poster here and owner of a Kawai ES8 since last weekend. Coming from keyboard playing (chords left hand, melody right hand) I want to learn piano playing as well and the ES8 is a nice addition to my arranger keyboard (Yamaha Tyros 5).

The Kawai ES8 has the option to plug in an external sound source and indeed I can connect the line-in to my PC sound card line out and hear sound via the internal speakers of my ES8. However when recording in mp3 or wav format I don't hear anything. Is wav or mp3 recording restricted to the internal piano sounds?

Rgs,

Willem

I'm pretty sure the recording is restricted to the sounds generated by the ES8, though I don't have the manual handy. That's also true of the onboard effects -- they only work on the piano-generated sounds, not on the audio that you feed in.

I have a computer music setup, and when I want to record, I usually record the piano to a MIDI track on the computer while listening to the backing tracks (played in the same software so that everything synchronizes nicely). Then I can fix or overdub any areas in the MIDI where I made mistakes or want additional notes. When I've got the MIDI notes where I want them, I have the computer play the piano via MIDI while recording a WAV file to my USB thumb drive. Then I move the WAV file onto my computer, and carefully align it to the MIDI notes.

This eliminates a couple of steps of digital-analog-digital conversion, which can degrade the sound unless you have a pretty high-end audio interface; and I feel it gives a very professional result.

Hello Willem.
From the Manual, page 55:
"The audio recorder will only record sounds produced by the instrument. Devices connected via the LINE IN jacks will not be recorded."
