Hi all

There was discussion a few months ago about the Roland Kiyola KF-10, and some posters were enthusiastic about the design while others were critical about the specs (in particular the key action).

I gathered that the criticism was based mostly on studying the specs and would like to know if anyone has gotten their hands on one since to confirm/overturn their criticisms?

- I've read that the KF-10 is effectively the HP603/605 in a new case. Is this so?

- Can anyone describe the buttons/menu system? The presentation video on the Roland website is very "artful" and doesn't show anything at all besides the (admittedly lovely) wooden casing and the keys.

- Given the difference in the case to the HP603/605, have any adjustments been made to the loudspeaker system? I played the 603/605 yesterday and liked them a lot, but was surprised at how (subjective opinion alert) "indirect" the sound seemed. I had the same issue with the LX-7 and LX-17: lovely sound coming out, but it seemed as if the sound was going everywhere but in the direction of my ears. (Out of interest I tried a FP-50 nearby, expecting less bang for my buck, and was bowled over at how much aural oomph it had. I ended up playing that for ages, immersed by the possibilities -- which is usually the best sign for a new instrument.)

- Someone mentioned to me that the Kiyola KF-10 is being made in limited quantities. How limited? And how can you try before you buy -- assuming a local Roland dealer even gets one?

Thanks again for all your help. It's such an amazing resource here: I've learned so much.

Regards from Berlin, Germany.

There's a bit of a difference having small speakers on a stage piano right in your face (ears), versus a console with a speaker set up often projecting a more encompassing aural experience or aimed at the audience rather than the player. Of course you can modify both set ups accordingly to improve the effect vis a vis.

I had a very brief opportunity to try the KF-10 at Musikmesse a couple of months ago. The instrument's exterior design is certainly very attractive, and it features the same modelled piano sound and PHA-50 keyboard action as the HP-603/HP-605. However the smaller control panel suggests to me that some of the additional sounds and features of the HP models may have been omitted. It should be possible to check the instrument's operation by downloading the owner's manual.

Kind regards,
James

I tried one, and wrote a previous review.

Everyone has different tastes. My thoughts were:

- I liked the action, but not as much as a Kawai MP
- the sound was just okay
- very under amped and speakered for the price, disappointing
- oak cabinet does not extend to back making it look cheap unless it's against a wall
- not many outs or flexibility
- I would never use the Bluetooth or stereo aspect so waste of money for me

Verdict: twice the price it should be. It is like buying a new trendy car that is way over priced for the quality.

Hi, I agree with Ottawa58... I prefer the Kawai MP11 and even MP7 key action over any Roland PHA key action or the Yamaha NW... Regards!.
