I should choose between either one to play with our school's orchestra next year in may.

Those of you that have worked with these pieces... Which do you think would be more difficult to pull off for both me and the orchestra. My teacher thinks that the Liszt would be harder, but I really don't think so.

I like the Rach more, not just for the ossia, but then again, the Liszt is still a whole work, with a glorious finale and all.

So I don't really know, and I'd like your opinions on the comparative difficulty of Liszt 1 vs Ist movement, with ossia cadenza, of Rach 3.

(And please don't suggest that I learn the whole of Rach 3 - there's a time limit of approx. 15-20 minutes)

Thanks!

Admittedly I've only played through those pieces, not studied seriously, but the Liszt seems a little easier.

Hi, Svenno - My own "gut-feel"? Go with the Liszt 1: It's an entire musical statement, as opposed to a single movement, and that's for me inherently more satisfying. I really don't think one is significantly more difficult than the other from a technical standpoint -- they're both obviously quite difficult. And they're roughly equivalent as "crowd-pleasers", so for me it would be the contrasts in the music itself.
