While recognized as a lightweight, Joplin is undoubtedly unique, and played an important role in the development of American music. He was by far the most inspired composer in the genre, and much of his music affects me significantly. Because of this, I am reserving a slot for myself! grin

The recital will be comprised of selections from Scott Joplin's complete rags. To choose a piece, PM me and I will add your name to the list via daily updates. If you see your name on the list, submit your recording to me via PM. If there is a piece you would like to play that is not on the list, PM me and I will add it. The deadline will be Friday, July 8th at 6pm EST. Here is the list:

Original Rags
Maple Leaf Rag
Swipesy Cakewalk
Peacherine Rag
The Easy Winners
A Breeze from Alabama
Elite Syncopations
The Entertainer
The Strenuous Life
Something Doing
The Favorite
The Cascades
The Chrysanthemum
Bethena
Heliotrope Bouquet
Gladiolus Rag - SiFi
Fig Leaf Rag - JoelW
Wall Street Rag
Sugar Cane
Solace - Vid
Country Club
Euphonic Sounds
Pineapple Rag
Felicity Rag
Kismet Rag
Magnetic Rag

I would work on one if I had a way of recording. Awesome music. Looking forward to hearing performances.

Always working to improve "Chopsticks". I'll never give up on it.

Do we have to do the recording by the 8th too?

Personally I think your average phone is good enough for an online recital. As long it's a decent volume with minimal background noise I think people will be happy to listen.

I would like to join, but am just learning a simplified version of "The Entertainer", so I need some more time ...

Joel - Perhaps you'll get better participation - and a higher quality product - if you extend the deadline to the end of August.

Joplin may be lightweight, but his music isn't necessarily easy to play well. I assume that most folks would be learning a piece from scratch and would need time for it to really settle in. I'd love to participate but have too much going on in the next few weeks to meet a July 8th deadline.

Hope you will reconsider.

...

I would dare to participate, but the Jul 8 deadline is daunting. (Week-long business trip upcoming, separate travel to attend a concert). Would consider performing "Magnetic Rag" if the deadline could be pushed out some..

Okay. The deadline will be pushed to August 15th. Two months should be plenty of time to learn a rag.

I'm going to enjoy listening to this recital very much! Although I would like to participate, I'm afraid all my time is currently consumed finishing up a few pieces for a series of master classes in July. Looking forward to everyone else's submissions though!

JoelW, can one person sign up for multiple pieces?

I mentioned the recital to my teach. He wanted to do a duet (where he'll do all the flashy stuff), but I'm also interested in working on and submitting a solo piece.

(Still mulling over exactly what piece I want to do.)

You asked if simplified versions are acceptable, and to remove you from the list if they weren't.

Note to all: Simplified versions will not be accepted.

If by the deadline there are still open slots, you can do more than one.
