While recognized as a lightweight, Joplin is undoubtedly unique, and played an important role in the development of American music. He was by far the most inspired composer in the genre, and much of his music affects me significantly. Because of this, I am reserving a slot for myself! grin

The recital will be comprised of selections from Scott Joplin's complete rags. To choose a piece, PM me and I will add your name to the list via daily updates. If you see your name on the list, submit your recording to me via PM. If there is a piece you would like to play that is not on the list, PM me and I will add it. The deadline will be Friday, July 8th at 6pm EST. Here is the list:

Original Rags
Maple Leaf Rag
Swipesy Cakewalk
Peacherine Rag
The Easy Winners
A Breeze from Alabama
Elite Syncopations
The Entertainer
The Strenuous Life
Something Doing
The Favorite
The Cascades
The Chrysanthemum
Bethena
Heliotrope Bouquet
Gladiolus Rag - SiFi
Fig Leaf Rag - JoelW
Wall Street Rag
Sugar Cane
Solace - Vid
Country Club
Euphonic Sounds
Pineapple Rag
Felicity Rag
Kismet Rag
Magnetic Rag

I would work on one if I had a way of recording. Awesome music. Looking forward to hearing performances.

Do we have to do the recording by the 8th too?

Personally I think your average phone is good enough for an online recital. As long it's a decent volume with minimal background noise I think people will be happy to listen.

I would like to join, but am just learning a simplified version of "The Entertainer", so I need some more time ...

Joel - Perhaps you'll get better participation - and a higher quality product - if you extend the deadline to the end of August.

Joplin may be lightweight, but his music isn't necessarily easy to play well. I assume that most folks would be learning a piece from scratch and would need time for it to really settle in. I'd love to participate but have too much going on in the next few weeks to meet a July 8th deadline.

Hope you will reconsider.

...

I would dare to participate, but the Jul 8 deadline is daunting. (Week-long business trip upcoming, separate travel to attend a concert). Would consider performing "Magnetic Rag" if the deadline could be pushed out some..

Okay. The deadline will be pushed to August 15th. Two months should be plenty of time to learn a rag.

I'm going to enjoy listening to this recital very much! Although I would like to participate, I'm afraid all my time is currently consumed finishing up a few pieces for a series of master classes in July. Looking forward to everyone else's submissions though!

JoelW, can one person sign up for multiple pieces?

I mentioned the recital to my teach. He wanted to do a duet (where he'll do all the flashy stuff), but I'm also interested in working on and submitting a solo piece.

(Still mulling over exactly what piece I want to do.)

You asked if simplified versions are acceptable, and to remove you from the list if they weren't.

Note to all: Simplified versions will not be accepted.

If by the deadline there are still open slots, you can do more than one.

I'd love to bring back The Easy Winners, but I will be away from a piano until August 2nd... I suppose I'll just have to wait and post it myself on November 24, which is Joplin's birthday (and also my birthday!)

I personally think that is the optimal date for a Joplin e-cital, but this is Joel's, not mine. I'm excited to listen to the final product.

I signed up and have been accepted to play Swipsey. I had never played this before and so my practicing started from then. Since then I do not see others adding their names and am wondering if some are practicing first before making a proposal?

Not that this is a problem its just that it would be great if before August we can have all the tunes covered.

The suggestion has already been made that the non classical group might have been a more receptive group to post to.

If you are interested, I am certain that if you as the OP sent a notification to Frank he would move the whole post over. He has recently done this for me with one of my posts.

Earlier JoelW wrote to only include originals, but as I am a beginner, I want to try "The Entertainer", if it is allowed to use John Brimhall's arrangement.

I got the impression those pieces were being snaffled up hungrily at the outset.. .so I dived in with one I needed to maintain, but hadnt. Like, if I didnt, it wouldve gone to someone else. . . rapidly!

JoelW,

I already posted asking just how we should submit for this recital. You have not replied and we are now into August. As the OP and instigator I expected you to give guidance about submissions and also encouragment for others to register.

What say you.

Ian

I'm curious about how recital submissions in the Pianist's Corner work as well. Joel specified to submit via PM, so I am assuming this means uploading your piece to some place like soundcloud.com (or youtube.com?) and then sending the link to JoelW... but not sure where the final pieces are posted.

When you've finished your piece, send it to me via PM so I can organize the recital.

Sorry if I appear thick but when you said "send it to me via PM" did you mean for me to attach a wav file to the pm or are you asking for a link to wherever I upload it?

Hi, Beemer -- Joel isn't asking for a link -- the Piano World PM site is requesting it. Others seem to upload their efforts into either Box or SoundCloud, and at least Box has a simple way to copy the uploaded File, and that can be subsequently pasted into the PW link. I assume SoundCloud has the same capability.

You can post it in the recital thread when you get back. Isabelle1949 doesn't seem to be active right now so I'm going to just post the recital today at 6pm EST.

Thanks for managing this e-cital, Joel! It's a shame that there wasn't more interest. Join the Russians over in ABF, I guess!

Hopefully, the submissions we do have will help generate more interest here. thumb I'm hoping there will be some enthusiasm for doing another "rag" themed recital in the future - perhaps including works by other composers (such as Bolcom). smile

Here's an interesting PW thread from 2007.

You mean just by itself? Or do you want to add it to the others? I'll send you a PM with the URL in any case.

A few people have PM'd me about adding their performances to the recital. Go ahead and just post them in the recital thread. No need to make a separate thread and be left out.

Sorry I never got to finish and submit mine. I got sidetracked by a consulting job that took a whole lot of time.

It was a joke. Most "ecitals" are unstickied after a few months but this non-classical one has been up for over a year
