Can anybody recommend some good speakers for my RD-800 ? I'm using a pair of Yamaha studio monitors right now which are OK but have a flat sound. Would like some speakers with a little more life in them and there's just such an array of speakers out there, was wondering if anybody might have some suggestions for me to check out ….

How big is the room and do you intend to place these speakers on stands just behind and to the left and right of the RD800 slightly pointed toward your ear-balls?
In which case you want some near field monitors. 5" are a little light on bass. You could go 6.5", even 8" but if so you want them a little further away. You have Yamahas.... are they the HS8s?. If so, these are very nice. You should consider adding the HS8S matching sub-woofer if you're interested in some extra umph in the lower frequencies of your digital piano.
But you didn't mention budget. And the HS setup is not cheap.

ElmerJFudd - Thanks for your reply. Yes, the speakers are on stands just as you describe them. They're actually HS7's and as you say, they're nice. But the sound is flat, a term I didn't really understand until I spent some time using them. OK but lifeless. The bass has sufficient "umph" (I live in an apartment). Guess I'm looking for some suggestions from people like yourself who can say, "I use these speakers with my RD-800 and they sound fantastic and you should try them too", that kind of advice. Because right now I'm just overwhelmed with the choices and all I can think to do is go through them, one model at a time, trying them out till I find a pair I like. Must say, the sales people I've encountered haven't been a lot of help even though you'd expect them to be. So that's why I'm fishing here on good ol' Piano World. Budget is not an issue, I like cheap as much as anybody but I'm willing to pay for what I want.

Crocus, I almost bought the same speakers you have for my RD-800. The guy at the store said they were very flat sounding as I guess they should be for studio monitoring. I got two JBL LSR305 speakers instead after comparing several different speakers connected to a RD-800 in the store. They sound great to me. I don't know if the sound comes across well in my YouTube videos but you can hear them here: http://youtube.com/c/PianoTipping

Piano Tipping - Thanks much ! Have three busy days ahead here but on the week-end I will certainly go back to the store and check out those JBL's. It is hard to tell on a video, as you say, but the fact that you use them and like them means a lot. Took a quick trip through your videos and they sound great no matter what speakers you're using ! Will also get into them on the week-end. Again, thanks.

Hi, I would recommend Focal Solo 6 BE - if you got the money. they sounds warm and awesome for piano.
if not, I would go with the adam A7X, both of them are great.
regarding the yamaha - I personally wouldn't go on them, but its a matter of personal taste.

I'm also looking for speakers for my RD-800, so thank you all for the hints. In my case, it won't be for playing piano only, but also for recording, mixing and listening to music in general. It would be nice to have some monitors' technical comparison chart to help choosing one, since it's difficult to find a good physical store in some cities...

You won't learn anything useful from a technical spec chart. It seems a bit strange to go all anal on the ability to recreate the sound. What speakers do you listen to music on normally? Most people listen to Mozart and Beethoven on $200-$300 hifi and car stereos and earphones that come free with iphones. Yet they play digital piano and think they need $1,000 studio monitors to produce sound for 1 person (or they're like euphoria and think you should spend $3,000 - $4,000 on professional studio level monitoring).
What sounds good is extremely subjective. I would take a recording of your piano in the highest quality you can (pref wav from it direct or high quality line recording - you can probably get one off the net if you can't take one yourself), put it on your phone and then go around to some shops with a wide variety of speaker systems and see how it sounds. You'll learn more than looking through 5 years of forum posts about why Yamaha sucks or you need Adam speakers.
Personally, I would be looking at 2.1 systems.
