This is the ad

This Kawai KGC2 is a professional grade. The equivalent today would be in excess of $20,000.00. This piano is a one owner purchased locally and NOT A GREY MARKET JAPANESE piano manufactured in 1974 and in showroom condition. It is 5'10" long. The lid is adjustable at two heights. This instrument has a polyester ebony finish and is virtually blemish free. There is no fading or sun damage to the case. The serial number is 744407.

I know it's old but i will have a tech check it out. If it checks out, is this a quality piano?

I previously owned a KG2C built in 1977. It was in the family for about 25 years. I loved it; I practiced regularly on it and never had any problems. I did have it voiced as the sound became brighter through the years. I only upgraded because I wanted a larger piano.

First of all,it is a KG2C It is not Kawai's professional grade. The comparable new model(size wise)is a Kawai RX2 but the KG2C is not even close as to being equivelent. Not being Gray market on this piano means nothing as for added value.
Polyester ebony finish(black)doesn't fade
KG2(C) was Kawai's first KG series, manufactured till the late seventies. Strucurally a pretty good workhorse piano but it is getting kinda old for an Asian piano. It may need to be restrung or the action felts are getting hard(kluncky noisey)or ?
They later came out with a KG2D,KG2E,KG2A and a KG2S The later models were somewhat better as for action and hammer quality in my opinion. Refer to Larry Fine's earlier edition for more detail on the versions ex.KG2D was voiced much darker and the action design was changed considerably. KG2E was much brighter to compete with Yamaha and the action again was changed (much firmer as for feel and heavier touchweight) more characteristic to the Kawai GS40 (6'1") in my opinion. I've owned over 100 KG series grands and felt the early KG2C was kinda brassy sounding as for its tonal quality. I prefer the later mdl. KGs (D)(E)(A)(S)
The magic question is HOW MUCH $ and if low milage and how frequent the oil was changed.
The KG2C would sound and run better with new heads
Oh! I meant new hammers.

Thanks guys. The price set is $4500 but she said it is negotiable so I'm hoping for at least $4000, maybe even $3500 if it doesn't sell for awhile and she really wants to get rid of it. I will have to ask her how often it has been tuned.

Around how much would new hammers cost?

Also will it need new strings? I'm not sure how long strings last.

New hammers would improve it greatly (Renner,Abel,Ari Issac or maybe new prehung Kawai hammer, shank, flanges) Could cost you $1000-$1500 or more. Asian bass strings get thuddy prematurely especially in a detrimental environment. Rusted steel strings will evidence
a detrimental environment
Hopefully it does not have any of these symptoms. The piano is 33 years old. It better be mint to justify that price. If it didnt come out of a time capsule, look for a newer piano. Realisticly if it needs restringing and action parts etc. forget it at any price Your tech will hopefully tell you the scoop on the piano

I was an original owner of a KG 2C (5'9") up to about 3 years ago. It served me very well and held up without problems.

I sold it for $1,000.00

Good luck,
fingers

Playing piano at age 2, it was thought that I was some sort of idiot-savant. As it turns out, I'm just an idiot.

Hmm. well that's a little disappointing. Maybe i can get her to come down some more if my tech says it needs work. The only other piano i'm considering right now is a 5'5" story and Clark that is three years old. I thought though if an old kawai was in good condition it would be better then a Dongbei.

fingers sold that too cheap though I don't know it's cond.
All I'm saying is that if it needs to much work, it is not advisable to buy a fixerupper(unless you are a rebuilder) and than pay someone to refurbish it. The restoration work could cost more than the piano. You put the $ into the piano itself on the initial purchase (newer piano which doesn't need anything for years to come).
Hopefully this piano is mint

Thanks for all the help pianoBroker. She advertises it as "showroom condition" so hopefully it is as she says. I am going to have a tech look at it though.

If it is, as she says, in "showroom condition" would it be a quality piano or much better than a 3 years old story and clark?

If in showroom cond.I think that KG2C would be better structurally than the Story & Clark though the S&C is a newer piano.
Its funny, I am a Story & Clark dealer
Dongbei make them better now than 3 years ago in my opinion
You're asking to compare two different animals.
Cond. of the Kawai KG2C is the deciding factor

PianoBroker-- Well thanks for your honesty in not showing bias. I'm going to try and go see it Friday and have a tech meet me there and we'll see what he says about it
