I hear this detuning occurrence in my FP30 and personally I love it – it sounds natural/acoustic. Are you _sure_ you aren't hearing beats, caused by "equal temperament" tuning? I'd be interested in what an electronic tuner (guitar tuner, or PC guitar-tuner app, or smartphone app like "DA Tuner") showed. There may be some "octave stretching" in the high octave or two, but aside from that, everything _should_ be in tune on the FP-30. Thanks -- To be honest - I don't know what you meant. Probably my English is not enough. BTW - I detuned my FP30 on 432Hz (checked by Entropy Piano Tuner - http://piano-tuner.org/download ).

Here was Roland's reply to me: We reviewed the article you sent, and have not heard of these "out-of-tune" complaints with the FP-30. We've forwarded the information on to our piano product manager, and will let you know if we learn of any of those claims as being actual issues.
Congratulations on your purchase!
Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you!
Kind regards,

That AZpianonews guy should provide evidence, it is really not hard at all, he could use a tuner and record it live, record some notes and use software for analysis.
But stating that without any evidence is totally unprofessional.

Thanks Pete! Yes, I agree...there is a chorusy/phasey quality to that piano sound. It's not really my cup of tea, but each to their own. James x

This video link is of an acoustic piano right? That was the intention! The piano was a DGX650 and Pianoteq combined and the occasion for the recording was the ABF recital where many acoustics are in evidence, hence my attempts to emulate the state of tuning! Only to find that everybody had tuned their acoustics to perfection. . .

I posted a comment on AZpianos asking him to make a recording of the perceived out of tune. I have a hard time believing Roland would make such a mistake. Have yet to try the FP30 but will soon as I am about to open it

Just opened my Roland FP30 and what can I say? Wow!! Did I say wow? Well, I say it again. Wow!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe the sound of this piano. It is amazing. And the action feels very similar to the real piano I play at a local restaurant. The issue with the tuning. I think it is the stretch affect. This is actually what a real piano is supposed to sound like. Amazing! Way to go Roland!!!

Hey, Its hard to say that a piano is out of tune, just because tuning is compromise. Perfect tuning doesn´t exist in practice, and either in Theory due in first term of the equal temperament, and in second term beacuse of the inharmonicity of strings... so... Should be more argumented in terms of intervals beatings. I made a measure of the Inharmonicity with Tune Lab, with the inconvenient that i can´t mute the strings, to measure only one of the "3 strings". Anyway. If someone is curious, here are the results. According to the tuning curve proposed for tunelab in full automatic mode, the FP-30 it´s not allways coincident, but for sure it doesn´t means that it is out of tune, because Tune Labe just propouse one possible curve (a nice one) We don´t know witch curve uses Roland. IMHO, the FP-30 has a nice stretched tuning. I would never say that is out of tune, and I would be surprised if such a big company make this mistake,.... but.... It´s just my ears... Enjoy!

Tim Praskins/azpianonews is just a big stooge. He doesn't review digital pianos, he sells digital pianos - and he points people towards his brands. He finds ways to "praise" other pianos, but always leaves you with the feeling that they have something wrong with them that his brands can do better. It's always the same. Stay away from that site - it's not a review site, it's a giant sales-pitch.

Stay away from that site - it's not a review site, it's a giant sales-pitch. I must admit I was a bit surprised he made such an emphatic statement: "Unfortunately, the FP30 is...believe it or not...OUT OF TUNE." on his website. Then he tries to justify with this: "Whoever originally tuned the piano sound (sampled from a real piano) in the FP30 did a poor job in my opinion. I have also verified this issue with an independent expert piano tuner and he examined it and agrees with my finding...the temperament was not set correctly." Why would he comprise his relationship with Roland and jeopardize his reputation as a dealer without researching it further and communicating thoroughly with Roland?

I also have a feeling that he might be doing this because the Roland FP30 just kills the competition. I mean, it really does. This piano is awesome folks! I am still just blown away by it. I finally have a digital piano that is portable and sounds like a real grand piano with the built in speakers. I can only imagine what Roland is going to come up with in the years to come...

I'd asked before - ref direction connection from the FP-30 to another midi device and was told not possible even with USB-midi converters
but would I be right in thinking I can go FP-30 - Cubase - back to my MOXF ? with usable latency ?
thanks

Buckster, yes, that should work. I've never tried it myself, so cannot comment on the latency.

For the headphone jack, are those powered by the same amp as the internal speakers, or does it use some other internal amp? I'm curious how much power it puts out.
I have some low impendance in-ear monitors, but wondering how much more sound I can get with over-the-ear closed or open headphones. I let my friend borrow my DT770 80 ohm before I purchased my piano, so will get those back to try. I know other popular ones are Sennheiser 598, 600, 650, and Audio Technica M40x, M50x. What are you guys using?
