Hi everyone,
I have the choice between a Yamaha P105 and Kawai CN33 (for US$100 more than P105), within my budget for a used DP.
I understand when these were new, this would be like apples and oranges. But now a 3 year old entry level vs a 5-6 year old mid range DP are both in the same price range.
Is one clearly a better choice than the other?
Because these are in the used market, I don't have the luxury of comparing them side by side.

The built-in stand (cabinet) and the 3 pedals make the price difference alone. Those would be 100$+ if you were to buy them for a P105.
Of course, one of them is portable and the other isn't...

I have a P105 that I bought used and it works fine for me as a beginner. $100 seems like a really good price. Check the functions first if you can. I discovered that that "pianist styles" function on mine didn't work after I purchased it. Electronics evolve quickly so the sound quality of the Yamaha could be well ahead of the Kawai. I'm not familiar with the CN33 so I can't really say for sure.

Thanks for your feedback! The built-in stand (cabinet) and the 3 pedals make the price difference alone. Those would be 100$+ if you were to buy them for a P105. Actually I neglected to include that the P105 comes with the furniture stand and 3 pedals as well. So the only difference is only styling. $100 seems like a really good price. I wish it was only $100...  I meant to say the difference between the two used pianos is $100.

Hi everyone,

Thanks! I have no experience of the Kawai CN33. but I played a P-105 yesterday that I bought for a small church last year. And I have a P-115 at home. The difference is really minor between this two and the P-105 is still an excellent instrument, in my opinion! Peace

Then one of them costs to much. I was waiting for the "buy neither, get a new one" response.  I might be new around here but I've read plenty. Seriously though I don't think you'd find a P105 with stand/pedals/bench bundle for $100 anywhere.

Seriously though I don't think you'd find a P105 with stand/pedals/bench bundle for $100 anywhere. So what are the used prices now?

Hi, excuse me, but this is not a fair comparison... IMHO, Kawai RH present in CN33 is a muchhhhhhh better key action than the Yamaha entry level GHS key action present in P105; even Kawai entry level AHA-IV is much better than GHS. Cheers!.

Thanks for your input. This is what I understand as well. My concern was that the P105 is only one generation removed (or practically current since P115 is essentially the same product), and only 2 years old. But by now the CN33 is three generations removed from the current CN35, and it's already 5 years old.

CN33 has the PHI sound engine, as our CN35, which I think is quite good. For sure it is better than the P series by Yamaha, just compare in the high end / discant.
CN33 does not have three sensors in the keys, I think. That came with the CN34. But neither has the P105, as far as I know.
Not sure about the sound, but I guess the CN33 should be able to project better simply because of the bigger size of its speakers.
Kawai CN35. Daughter wanted a piano, so we got one. Now who'll learn faster? ;-)

Everyone,
Thanks for all your input. I decided to go with the CN33.
It has a few of the known Kawai clicking keys in the upper registers (I found a few threads on this topic). But this piano is still covered by the warranty so I should be able to get a tech to look at it.

Congratulations on the purchase. Having a piano to play is the right choice :-)
Still covered by warranty? Great! I had a few keys that sounded different than the others and it was fixed by lubing the right part of the key/action.
Kawai CN35. Daughter wanted a piano, so we got one. Now who'll learn faster? ;-)
