Looking at two used pianos for my grandchildren. Buying just one of them.

CN31..AHA-IVE..HI II
CN23..RH..PHI

Looks to me the 23 has a better action and sound engine.

The 31 supports LnIn and LnOut. Larger speakers.

Neither support USB anything.

Thoughts?

The tone generator of the CN31 is ancient, the CN23 should sound way better. Instead of USB-to-host (for connecting a PC/tablet/phone) the pianos offer native MIDI, so all you need is a affordable USB MIDI interface, which newer pianos just have built in.

If you are looking for USB-to-device to record songs on USB memory, only the current CN35 offers this feature.

Hello Jon,

As you note, the CN23 features a superior keyboard action (RH) and sound engine (PHI), while the CN31 offers a broader range of features.

Given the choice between these two models and assuming both are the same price, I would be more inclined to select the CN23, based on the more modern keyboard action and sound technology.

Kind regards,
James

Thanks James. The 31 is $500 as the owner has to sell by month end. Moving. The 23 is quoted as $1200 or BO. I will be playing both in the next couple days.

I wouldn't buy that for $500. In that price range you can get a superior sounding DP brand-new.

That I would only pay for a used CN25 in good condition, not the older predecessor.

Don't go with either. Spend $600 and get a Casio PX-160. USB MIDI, line outs, and a very good action for the price compared with these much older models.

With spending approx $1200 on an older model, it makes sense to me to seriously consider a CE220 at $1900.

Sound Engine (PHI) (same as CN23)
Wooden Action (AWA Pro II)
USB to Device
USB to Host
Polyphony - 192
Line In and Line Out
Plus some other small features here and there.

Thanks ...
