Weird lid:

http://buffalo.craigslist.org/msg/5536093566.html

Any thoughts to who made it? I've never seen a split lid like this, very curious. Thanks!

No, I have not seen a grand piano lid exactly like that one; and, I think someone cut the lid side-ways near the back for some reason. I'd venture to say that is not a factory/manufacturer design but a hack-job someone did for some reason.

Personally, I don't like it, but that is just my opinion. They ruined the lid in my view.

The husband wanted the lid up for playing; the wife insisted that Aunt Agatha's urn always remain on the piano she loved.

Voilà!

Cheers!

Wow, it's literally a "no name" piano.

The stick looks a trifle unorthodox too.

Interesting to me, but not functional. I noticed there is no "half lid". No visible hinge to fold back the front half of the lid.

Although I guess functional doesn't always go into piano design. Check out this lid, for instance. We rebuilt this historic Mathushek grand piano. It had some real innovations in design and some very confusing choices as well, including this lid design:

And look at how the top interferes with the desk. Any music put on that desk would immediately fall into the player's lap.

My hunch is that someone with little or no actual piano experience cobbled this top together in their garage, possibly to replace the original top that had been damaged beyond repair.

I'll bet the lid was some how ruined, and the replacement was made by a do-it-yourselfer that thought he/she could improve on the original or was constrained by the materials available. Reminds be of the thread about the front flap not being folded back while being lifted.

Is there not a faint line on one of the pictures that might indicate a hinge line?

Most people who would cobble together a replacement lid would not do it so neatly, nor put an ogee on the edge.

Maybe the glue along a butt joint on the lid simply split up and they never fixed it, leaving only the hinged part able to be opened.

You and I must have very different ideas of "neatly." First of all, I only see an ogee on the front unlifted (unliftable?) portion on the lid, not the cobbled together lifting portion. And either the front of the lid is unhinged and doesn't fold back or the lifting portion is attached to the piano with only a single hinge. That is because there is only one hinge visible on the lifting portion. If the front portion has a second hinge that can't be seen in the picture that hinge would prevent the front portion from lifting.

Looks like a hack job to me.

Larry.

I didn't see it, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.
