I thought you all would get a good laugh out of this:

Quote
Q. This photo is of an Everett piano that my sister and I purchased from the Jenkin's Music Company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1954. It cost $60 and we paid $5 a month until it was paid for. [...] Can you give me an estimate of its value? Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

and the answer said, in part:

Many similar upright pianos sell in range of $2,000 to $4,000. I did find an Everett upright that was made in the late 1890s on the Internet. It was completely restored and they were asking $12,500.

Do 115 year old verticals really sell from $2000 to $4000 in the Chicago area!?

There has been someone trying to sell an old Everett upright for around $4300 on Craigslist here for a long, long time. Asking price is not selling price!

This is almost certainly the $12,500 piano.

To be fair, I don't know one otherwise sane person, who owns an old upright, who isn't convinced it has to be worth thousands of dollars.

I got an email once from a guy who offered to buy my old Schiller upright (seen in my YT video with over 1,000,000 views) for roughly $4,000. I've received lots of comments and emails regarding that music video, and the guy struck me as being serious. Thing is, I kept the old Schiller upright, that I paid $75 for, about a year, and then sold it for $100. Just my luck... smile

My local Craigslist is a testament to this.

I have to confess that a few years ago I too suffered from the antique-pianos-must-be-worth-a-lot delusion! blush

Fortunately I didn't buy one, and don't have one to sell. grin yippie

Case in point: http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/msg/5482449631.html

It's not exactly priced for a quick sale.

If Mr Capone says it's worth 4k don't bother arguing, just start writing the cheque.

Actually, it occurred to me that the headline might have had more accuracy, although less impact, had it read:
'$60 piano likely now worth $60'
