Still on Bach's Invention 2 but will move on very soon.
Been derailed by having to clean up my old sheet music in Adobe Illustrator. The book is from the 70's and the light print is almost unreadable in some places. So, blow it up, re-draw, design and make new symbols from scratch in some cases.
Will do some R&B for a while. Give the classical a break.

Scales scales and more scales, and arpeggios, but using my newfound tricks (from my new teacher), it's amazing. Do everything block chords except the thumbs, to reinforce the thumb position.
And Bach Invention 14 with a new way of articulating (after old teacher said it's not okay, but new teacher says it's perfectly okay and that's the way he would do it). I can attest that it's easier to learn a piece the right way the first time than to unlearn and relearn.... but I'm having fun.

Maybe give your old sheet music a miss and just download some public domain stuff from IMSLP? (Unless you're emotionally attached to your 1970s copy, in which case I understand).

Hi Cathryn, Yes fundamentally it's what it's all about (Pressing those keys). Although it can be done in infinite ways.  What I like a lot about my 70's book is the carefully worked out fingerings. I still learn a lot from studying those as well as the harmony, structure, counterpoint and all the rest. It also has many additional pages with a wealth of additional information in how to play ornamentation in Bach's music, based on extensive research. Bach intended these pieces as educational material for the students to learn from and also later to be able to write their own compositions. Quote by J.S.Bach: "Sincere Instruction in which lovers of keyboard music, and especially those desiring to learn and play, are shown a clear way not only 1.) to learn to play cleanly in two parts, but also after further progress 2.) to proceed correctly and well with three obbligato parts, and at the same time not only to compose good inventions, but to develop them well; but most of all to achieve a cantabile style in playing, and to acquire a taste for the elements of composition." And yes, I'm also emotionally attached to this and other music books I have. It seems like such a shame to have them deteriorate to the point where everything is not readable. An extra bonus is that I also learn advanced techniques in using Illustrator and to put it to good use!

Very busy days.........but the college where I work has a musicroom with a nice Yamaha digital. And I have a lot of sheetmusic at my office. I'm learning Chopin, Fantasie Impromptu. I'm a little slow. I am also playing Gravity by John Mayer and I'm still enjoying Bach BWV 971. Italienisches Konzert, Italian Concerto.

20 february 2016Played several hours today. Played, among others, nearly the whole book of Sonatinen....composers Johann Baptist Vanhal and Jiri Antonin Benda (18th century) Könemann, Sonatinen II A lot of these Sonatinen can be found at imslp.org...... The first movement of the Waldstein is getting finally together, the last two pages are a B%%%%.
The second movement is "done" and I started the third... that will be a lot of fun.
Out of curiosity I took the old Czerny op 740 book and finally I was able to play the #1 above the indicated metronome mark... the last time I did it was about 2 years ago and I did top out at 72.... today I was able to hit 96 after 3 warm up rounds.... apparently all the work on my left hand did pay back.

Ataru, yes, Fantasie Impromptu is way too quick. I will play it through a few times a day and then put it away until summer- work on my left hand and my study and see what happens. cf

Today I practiced three pieces, and I'm pretty sure none of you ever heard about them. For the baroque recital Bach's Fantasia and Fuga BWV904. This is an awesome piece of music, but not extremely difficult technically.
For the "Theme with variations" recital I work on the second movement of Schubert sonata Op.42. Only this movement takes at least 10 minutes to play, and I don't even dream about learning the whole sonata. But this one like all Schubert sonatas is very beautiful.
I also started studying a new piece, Faure's third nocturne. It is a very delicate piece, and I hope that I can perform it at a recital for a live audience in the end of April. If not, I' ll have to find something else for that event.

I will play it through a few times a day and then put it away until summer- work on my left hand and my study and see what happens. cf I think it is a good idea, my problems were linked to the speed of the 454 back and forth in the whole etude, slowing me down considerably... several months of thrill drills, the whole Isidor philipp volume 1, and a bunch of other etudes, apparently did the work. I never felt than playing something through gave me any improvement in the technique necessary to get it done...

You brought me back me to Bach, you were talking about BWV904......I knew the Fantasia....so I took a look in my 'kind of organized library of sheet music' ( and there is a lot.....  ) and found another nice Fuga.....BWV947......same kind of work in a minor. 24 & 25 february 2016Yesterday and today only about half an hour time to play.....very busy with my work Some Buxtehude and of course my new favourite Bach Fuga bwv 947...... Only one day to go.......and there will be holidays for one week..... Best regards, Johan B
