Switched my attention to J.S. Bach's 2-part Invention 1. Working on phrase speed with HS. After getting them up to a good speed they are memorized.
This is a great piece to play the phrases by ear. And every one is melodious and beautiful and ought to be sung at the same time. I noticed and realized that all of this is the way Gould was doing it. Verify an accurate fingering and stick to it. Play the phrases as you hear it in your mind and learn to trust your ear. The 2nd half of the piece has melodic phrases one after the other for both hands with little interleaving, so it's one phrase after the other alternating hands, and memorization is really just memorizing the melodic phrases in your mind. After that, play what you hear. After getting in shape I will go for a maximum speed mixed with slow playing, all without tension of course.
Will do some R&B for a while. Give the classical a break. You can spend the rest of your life looking for music on a sheet of paper. You'll never find it, because it just ain't there. - Me Myself

Bach's 2-part Invention #1. It's going to take me a month of daily drilling of esp. 2 bars to get the LH up to speed and performing like rippling water. 4-2-3-4-5-3-4-2-3-thumb under-2-3....nice. It feels like I've had a work-out after a lot of that. Will likely dabble on other pieces in the same book also. Phrases and fragments might be a good idea.

Today I played for the first time Scarlatti K32 Aria, wonderful piece, it's a cracker . Well, I probably minced it being a stretch piece for me. Got it to sort of sound okay, the misses was impressed anyhow. Had I started it earlier it may have taken a punt for the upcoming recital. Speaking of which, I should have been recording something else tonight, but I couldn't get away from K32 once I started on it, but there is loads of time ... 5 days
Selftaught since June 2014. Books: Barratt classic piano course bk 1,2,3. Humphries Piano handbook, various... Kawai CA78, Casio AP450 & software pianos. 12x ABF recitals. My struggles: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-borro

The last 4 or 5 days. I've been starting each practise session with Hanon exercises, and then gone on to practise Bach C minor prelude.
For Hanon I am working on getting the first 6 exercises up to 108 bpm (the book says they should be played from 60bpm and gradually speed up to 108 bpm), focusing on evenness. I think it really helps to play them at varying dynamic levels (forte, and mezzo piano), as well as both staccato and legato. I also use different rhythms to practise them.
The C minor prelude is gradually becomming better. It's a bit trickier than I thought. I also like to practise that a lot in staccato. I am far from playing it at full speed and do not aim at being able to do that for now. If I get up to 100 bpm I'll be happy for now, but the edition I have recommends 144 bpm.

I've been working on Bach's 2-part Invention #2. The trills need a lot more work and I need to memorize the whole piece.

Kind regards, Johan B I know, Johan With the volume of pieces you go through it would seem impossible to memorize all that! I have a lot of technique to hone, though...so I stay longer with each piece.
