I watched this story on the CBS 60 minutes news broadcast this evening about 12 year old jazz prodigy Joey Alexander...

Wow, how could that 12 year old little fellow play that piano so well!! smile

He started playing (self-taught) at age 6.

Absolutely amazing.

Joey Alexander, 12 year old Jazz Prodigy

I've been following him since he was 9. Truly astounding. There are lots of young kids with oodles of technique, but I've never heard anyone that young with that kind of maturity. Amazing.
His debut album is also nominated for a Grammy this year for best instrumental Jazz album and he's nominated for best individual Jazz solo too. And he's a really nice and well adjusted kid to boot...

My significant other was performing with the big guns of traditional jazz since he was 12 also. Good for this kid!! :-) My sig other teaches at jazz camps and every once in a blue moon, he gets a teen with "the right stuff"... It's really amazing to be in awe of such raw talent.

I'm one of those self-taught kids. And while I wasn't a jazz prodigy, there's definitely something to be said for letting kids explore music on their own using their ear. It's heartening to see a young person so passionate about music on their own without being drilled after school for hours every day.

Still gotta find the time to play Nintendo, get suspended, and waste time on the Internet looking for warez and pr0n. Pace yourself, kiddo, or you'll never get to where I am!

Interesting interview...

Not only can the kid play superbly well for his age, he also has a very likable and humble personality. He was/is an inspiration to me.

I tried to pick up on a few of his Jazz licks. smile

I think a lot of us are looking for a lick or two from him smile .... I like the part in the interview where he says if you don't have a story then make one up!

One thing to note. Joey's been playing with jazz combos since 7 I think. This is perhaps a more optimal learning environment for some children than the classical route. So he's had 5 years of solid experience playing live jazz gigs and interacting with other musicians.
