Yes my new teacher told me that he could help me understand how to solve my problems! We shall see.

Nothing is forever.

A year from now you may be back with your previous teacher.

And so it goes ...

I don't have teacher problem in piano but did have lots of issues with violin and viola (my husband). The first viola teacher was simply very bad (my husband cannot even read notes, she just puts a huge circle on his Suzuki book pages "passed"). We were appalled at the first lesson and changed teachers. Then my husband quit. Months passed and I found myself wanting to take lesson. My friend referred me to another violin teacher. I was concerned the distance I have to travel to go to her house. It was over 1 hour of journey each way. She said that she could come to my house since the community orchestra practice near my house. However the practice was not all the time and I had to set up make up lessons frequently due to my business travel. So I found myself spending 3 hours every week just for violin lesson. Also she was very insistent on hours of practice. She knew piano is my main but did not want hear me that if cannot spend more than 10 min every day on the string. So I quit when I hurt my thumb. Now I'm going to take a 30 min string class at a local comm college. I just want to keep playing the string at that level until I retire and be a full time music student.

It's not always a matter of skill level, but where their specialty and focus is as well. Every teacher should know their strengths and weaknesses.

It's like any other relationship... some last years, some outlive their usefulness.

Oh, and students stop taking lessons all the time. Your old teacher should be used to it and not take it personally.

You think you've gone through some piano teachers grin :

It is about the journey not the destination! Starting with new teacher in 3 weeks. wink

Bit the bullet and started looking for a new teacher. Had my first lesson today and it went very well. I was impressed with me and he says I have potential. Of course, I know that is not necessarily a positive statement but he decides if he wants to accept a new student. So I officially start with new teacher next week.
I thought a lot about it and am not sorry I had first teacher. He taught me a lot. But now I know it is time to move on, without guilt!

Finally I started with my new instructor as well! It was very hard to wait. It is nice to feel validated in switching, it is an entirely new structure to the lesson and personality wise we mesh well.

I really do believe that "When the student is ready, the right teacher will appear." This has happened to me multiple times in my life, in different domains. You need to follow your intuition on these types of things.

It wasn't that my old teacher was bad, we hit it off in a different way. I would be willing to try him out again down the road if I felt I wanted to go in a different direction, but until then...and I do not know when that day will be. I would like to play with him again he had his own set of strengths.
