James, are the drumkits on the ES8 available from the panel? They weren't on the ES7.

No, I'm afraid not. I believe the ES8 drumkits are intended for the Rhythm Section accompaniments and for MIDI playback.

However, it's technically possible to play the drumkits by:

1. Connecting the MIDI OUT and IN connectors together using a single cable.
2. Setting 'Local Mode' to OFF.
3. Entering the relevant Program Change Number for the desired drum kit.

It's a little bit of 'hack', but the above process should work and is perfectly harmless. PianoManChuck used the same process to access additional GM voices on the MP7.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
James

I'm not sure whether to post this here, or over in 'Reviews an impressions' thread started by ColoRodney, however here's a product demonstration video courtesy of Kawai America:

I particularly enjoyed the comparison between the SK-EX and SK-5 sounds.

Kind regards,
James

I wonder what the reasoning is behind including an accompaniment section and MIDI playback, but not including a full GM soundset.

Its even weirder as the related CA models all have full soundsets (even though they're missing the accompaniment).

Does Kawai reason that people who use the Rythm section won't use MIDI files?

Roland doesn't have this problem on the FP-80 (or even the RP140 for that matter).

I'm afraid I don't know, however I'm sure the product development team had their reasons - perhaps they felt that improving the quality and selection of the core piano sounds was more important than providing a full GM sound set?

The CA97/CA67 feature 80 and 60 sounds respectively, so more than the ES8, but still not the full GM sound set. The CA range has never included accompaniments, perhaps because this kind of functionality is provided by the more flexible CP series instruments.

No, I don't believe so.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily call the absence of the full GM sound set a 'problem', however if this feature is very important to players, they may well be better served by other manufacture's instruments.

James

Whoops, I should've said the CN35, which has a full GM2 set. So clearly Kawai has the samples :-)

These appear to be only available in the USA (and are an order of magnitude more expensive).

There are compromises everywhere, just moaning about what stops the ES8 from being a no-brainer :-)

Hopefully going to try an ES8 tomorrow... pretty excited.
I'll be having to make my own mind up about how this compares to its competition, as I don't live near a superstore, so each keyboard I feel are in the running, are sold by different shops who are either clueless about the other brands or, in one case, clueless about their own brands (e.g. the Roland dealer saying, O no the FP80 doesnt have any built in rhythms.. and the Kawai dealer saying the only other make that has DPs with built in rhythms is Yamaha).
O well, if I like the sounds I think this could be the one, I just really wish it had a few more sounds (like the FP80 does, or even the Havian 30).
If not, I may have to go with it, and then maybe add a module later...
Thanks all for the comments so far...

Tried the ES8 out at the really great local dealer here in Norfolk UK... wow, what an instrument. So good, I've ordered one to be collected Saturday! Hope I've not done something wrong! Doesn't seem like it..

I have an ES8 on order through AZPianoWholesale... I couldnt find much about them but the transaction seems pretty safe to me and he offered the best pricing. I can't wait for it to arrive! Ive researched just about everything there is online about the ES8 and it totally is a winner! For me, if I ever want more sounds, I will just use my laptop and the ES8 as a midi controller at that point! I am looking forward to playing around with the new SK sounds! OH this is my first DP away from an upright!

The relative lack of sounds is the only real thing I would like to see more of. I'd be very interested what you would use for this, in terms of software.
Cheers

My shop owner told me he used to work for Yamaha in Japan and contributed musicaly (short for "played") on several hit records years ago. . mind, he sure can play.. .

I wonder if ES8 is the most popular dp on these forums; sure looks like it.

Actually the piano kind of sold itself.
Like everyone else, I just wish I could play better and do it more justice....

AZpianowholesale's price was $1675... I believe musicians friend can sale it for $1599 based off what someone posted in the prices paid section. I think musicians friend would be hard to get that price though as they list it for $1999 and big box stores usually dont discount as much. Tim at AZWholesale was really helpful over the phone and all I paid upfront is $200 and pay the rest after delivery after I make sure its what I ordered. The only catch I found is that with AZ the sales are final once item is shipped so there are no returns if you decide you dont want it. It still comes with the 3 year warranty from Kawai. The way he works, from what I can tell, is he doesnt stock anything on hand. He drop ships the order straight from Kawai to your door. Kawai is out of stock but should fulfill the order within the week. I cant wait!

EDIT!! I did the online chat with musicians friend and asked what their best price was on the ES8. They replied back with a %20 coupon code with would make it $1600. $75 cheaper than AZwholesale but then again Id rather support a smaller business to begin with. Note to self, always contact the store first to get pricing lol, dont rely on the posted price!

It looks like ES8 price going down? I spoke with Tim at AZpianowholesale second week of Nov and the price was 1,815. Is this due to Kawai holiday sale?

Maybe you should have done a deal with the store you used to try out the ES8 in the first place? Don't you think you owe them something for using their stock and showroom to make your online purchase? Your talk of supporting small business sounds a little hollow in this context.

Note to self, always contact the store first to get pricing lol, dont rely on the posted price!

Maybe you should have done a deal with the store you used to try out the ES8 in the first place? Don't you think you owe them something for using their stock and showroom to make your online purchase? Your talk of supporting small business sounds a little hollow in this context.

I tried negotiating with the store and they didn't want to bargain. Plus they weren't very local to me and didn't have stock except for the showroom unit.

Cheers

I use FL Studio and there are TONS of vst voices available to plugin for it.

Thank you!

I like this sound of a Shigeru Kawai more than Kawai's own recreation....with the goalpost of a STAGE piano in mind... (has to cut through the band mix easily without adjusting to much)
Therefore i cannot fully understand that the MP11 / ES8 and CA series have the same onboard main grand piano sounds......they should sound differently for different purposes instead of having basically the same sound.
My MP8 had way to much bass response live, that wasn't solved by simply cutting some low eq it sounded a little static, mushy and dark...okay for playing at home but not so much on stage.

Kawai has made sufficient progress of course , but since the MP8 / MP 9500 I still hear the same basic sound, maybe it is their way of close sampling in an unechoing chamber ?

How do those guys at Nord without a real piano history and second tier Fatar actions know how to sample a piano for stage usage while maintaining such an organic and lively sound that every other major hardware company seems to lack ....more or less ?

Kawai actions are the best, I personally prefer them over the Avant Grands for several reasons, I still feel Kawai should use another approach when sampling their own instruments instaed of adding another layer after a few years, increase the decay time with a second before looping etc.....(hypothetically speaking..)
Of course Nord isn't perfect in that perspective, but the basic sound is such a big plus that the i'll take the rest.
